SCHWEIN EU! Bavarian Buxom Barmaids Forced to Coverup?

EU threat to Bavaria's buxom barmaids 2.46PM, Thu Aug 4 2005

Bavaria's buxom barmaids could be forced to cover up if a "loony" EU directive comes into force over levels of sun exposure.

The proposals would force bosses to monitor how much sunlight their employees receive in a working day.

Such a ruling could affect the low cut outfits - known as dirndls - worn by German barmaids and made famous at Oktoberfest, the Munich beer festival.

The plans are thought to have caused consternation in Germany, with the mayor of Munich, Christian Ude, quoted as saying: "This is European law-making at its most pedantic.

"A waitress is no longer allowed to wander round a beer garden with a plunging neckline. I would not want to enter a beer garden under these conditions."

A newspaper from Munich reportedly described the EU initiative as the outright "cleavage ban".

The EU Optical Radiation Directive was originally designed to protect employees who work with X-ray machines or hot industrial equipment.

The European Commission added an amendment including sunlight as another potential danger to be controlled.

An EU spokesman insisted that if the legislation came into force, there would be no need for anyone to change their clothes.

"These proposals are seeking to protect people working outdoors and exposed to the sun for long periods," he said.

"According to Cancer Research, there are 69,000 new cases of skin cancer diagnosed each year.

"What this calls for is employers to assess the risk of skin cancer and retina damage.

"The measures of how to do that and the measures to act if there is a risk will be decided at a local level - in the UK, for example, by the Health and Safety Executive.

"There is no legislation calling for barmaids to change their attire, or for brickies to stop taking off their shirts.

"There are, of course, very simple preventative measures like sun cream - this is not about changing your clothes."

They could be in grave danger. I can see through certain items after about five of these...

Most appropriate, considering the screen name.

If you'd like, I could introduce you to a nice Miss Rhiengold.

"My Beer is Reingold the Dry Beer. you will find it where-ever you buy beer. It's not bitter or sweet, it's the Dry Reingold Treat, won't you try extra Dry Reingold Beer"? I Remember those Hazy,Lazy, Days of summer watching ballgames on the 12" T.V. screen With my Dad and Brothers and having to drive to the next town over so Dad could get some Reingold because we lived in a Dry Town! And with a case of Beer you would get a half dozen church keys!

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Does this include "toe cleavage" as well?

I remember the jingle as "... it's the dry-flavored treat," but that can be an effect of the passage of time. Or too many Rheingolds.

I also remember an animated tv spot with the bottles marching over the (I think) Brooklyn bridge.

It's being brewed again, btw. I bought a six pack not too long ago, and my wife (a beer-fancier from 'way back), observed that it should have been left in the horse.

Which sounds like they got pretty close to the original.
