SANTA ANA An Orange County sheriff's reserve deputy has been suspended from duty after he was arrested for allegedly flashing his badge, pulling a gun and threatening to kill a group of golfers at a Chino Hills course.
Raymond Yi, a reserve deputy since 2002 and Sheriff Michael Carona's martial arts instructor, turned in his badge and his department-issued gun Tuesday.
Prosecutors in San Bernardino County said Thursday that the charges against Yi will now include two counts each of assault with a firearm and making criminal threats. He had been initially charged with brandishing a firearm, a misdemeanor.
If convicted on all charges, Yi could face about 10 years in state prison. His arraignment is scheduled for Aug. 31.
Yi got into a dispute on Sunday with a group of golfers at the Los Serranos Golf & Country Club in Chino Hills.
The dispute started when Yi's ball landed near the foursome playing ahead of him and was upset over the group's slow play and pulled out a gun, authorities said.
Two brothers playing in the foursome said Yi approached them and then came back and flashed his badge. Yi asked that they get his ball and when they began driving away in a golf cart, they claimed Yi pulled his gun and yelled, "'Freeze'" and "'I will kill you."
A short time later, the dispute started up again and the brothers told authorities that Yi pulled out his gun for a second time and threatened to kill them.
Yi was referred to the department by Carona and had been issued a permit to carry a concealed weapon a year earlier, authorities said.
He will need those martial art skills in the pokey. Dumbass.
I've had a slow group in front of me and sometimes it is frustrating, but I've never pulled a gun... Jeez...
An obvious question would be why the taxpayers have to pay big bucks for a martial arts instructor when the deputies carry Glocks?
WOW make you wonder about Corona's leadership ability, cause he sure has a problem picking his friends..
They need it just to properly handle slow play without pulling the gun.
Between Haidl, Jaramillo, and now Yi, one has to wonder if it isn't part of the "qualifications for friendship."
I'm not sure of the rules here but I think that's a penalty stroke. Unless its just casual play, of course.
This sounds like they resumed the game then Yi came back....
Who in the heck resumes their game when the golpher behind you has already threatened you once with a gun?
How much would anyone like to bet that alchohol was involved with this????
NeverGore :^)
A police officer pulling a gun on a group of golfers. Perhaps if he had politely asked they would have let him play through. At least I now know what the word "FORE" stands for. If there are four golfers ahead of you playing slow you can pull out your weapon and yell "FORE". A martial arts instructor with a lack of self discipline roaming the fairways. Where is the golf ranger when you need him. I hear he carries a 30-30 carbine just to handle incidents like this!
Steroids?
I was up near his house last night at a clients house and there were TV news vans all over the place. They were interviewing the neighbors. What a circus!
yes one has to wonder.. now I understand why the state was questing the what 140 people he picked for the reserves.
The last time some dope flagrantly hit into me, I teed it up and hit it back over his head.
HA! I always wanted to try that.
Golf & Guns- an extremely bad combo! Almost as bad as, Drinkin' for Divots...
The fact I was able to hit it back over his head shows how egregious his drive was--we were still too close.
