TRENTON, Aug. 4 - Saying that New Jersey cannot endure another governor hobbled by personal entanglements, New Jersey Republican leaders called Thursday for Senator Jon S. Corzine to disclose any other financial dealings he may have had with a union leader to whom he gave $470,000.
Their statements came after news reports that in 2002 Mr. Corzine provided a $470,000 mortgage to Carla Katz, president of Communications Workers of America Local 1034, which represents 9,000 state workers and will be among the labor groups lobbying the next governor for billions of dollars in wages and benefits.
In an interview with The New York Times on Wednesday, Mr. Corzine, the Democratic candidate for governor, said he and Ms. Katz were dating at the time he made the loan. He forgave the debt in December 2004, several months after they ended their relationship, he said.
Mr. Corzine and Ms. Katz said this week that their past relationship and financial dealings would not prevent them from representing their constituents, but they declined to say whether they had other financial interactions.
Mr. Corzine's Republican opponent in the November election, Douglas R. Forrester, called that response inadequate, saying New Jersey voters had the right to know whether their official duties as governor and union leader might be swayed by their personal and financial relationship.
"I think they should disclose everything, especially if there is any ongoing financial arrangement," he said. "It suggests an all-too-familiar pattern in New Jersey of public officials entangling themselves in relationships that are not private matters but in direct conflict with the public interest."
While Mr. Forrester approached the topic rather gingerly, saying that he respected their right to privacy, other Republicans were more pointed in their criticism of Mr. Corzine.

ping
I'm sure she reported the forgiveness of debt income on her 2004 1040... Anybody care to ping the IRS tips line?...
Can we say Influence Buying? Corzine should go down for this.
"He's just chosen not to discuss a private relationship," said Corzine spokesman, Tom Shea.
So basically, if youre a corrupt politician who doesn't want to answer questions about payments to corrupt union leaders, you just have to #**! them first.
John Sweeneys going to have trouble walking.
Corzine also paid the gift tax on the money, which increases the size of the payoff, but satisfies any IRS regulations.
"While Sen Corzine maintains that there is absolutely no impropriety in his financial dealing with Ms. Katz, despite the efforts of GOP right-wing extremists to blow this way out of proportion, Sen Corzine understand that the people must be reassured of his total innocense. However, he also doe not want to reveal every aspect of his persoanl financial matters to the public. Therefore he has appointed two special masters who will have access to all his financial records, examine them, and issue a report to the public. Sen Corzine is very pleased that Senator Robert Torricelli and Governor James McGreevey have agreed to serve in this capacity."
I want to see if/or how much her union donated to Corzine's campaign
Did you type this or copy it?
I don't call him Corslime for nothing.

Democrats, on the other hand......
You had me going until the last sentence-- and even then I had to read it a couple of times! How sad it is that this could easily be TRUE.
Whats with the kid gloves treatment from The NY Times. What do you think the reaction from the Times would be if the party affiliations were reversed?

LOL Not good for a candidate when he becomes a sleazy sex joke.....then again, look at Clinton.
I understand Corzine also intends to pull out of a casino deal as well....but it's not clear if this will occur before or after Jon pulls out of Ms Katz.
I almost thought this statement was serious until I saw the reference to Torricelli and McGreevey. ;-)
Anyway, I pretty much wrote off NJ as a lost cause when the returned LOUSE-enberg to the Senate, 14 months after the 9/11/01 attacks, even after he said he still would oppose the death penalty for terrorists who kill Americans. Can you believe that?!
