LOS ANGELES, Aug. 5, 2005 – Each week the cast of "CSI: NY" uses scientific skill to solve mysteries. But the reason Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld visited the show's set in Studio City here Aug. 4 was no mystery: actor Gary Sinise is a solid supporter of U.S. servicemembers, and Rumsfeld's a big fan of Sinise and his efforts.
Rumsfeld visited the CSI set to thank Sinise personally for his support of the "America Supports You" program through his "Operation Iraqi Children" effort.
Sinise, who stars in "CSI: NY" as Detective Mac Taylor, co-founded Operation Iraqi Children with Seabiscuit author Laura Hillenbrand in March 2004. The organization collects and ships school supplies and toys to Iraq for distribution by U.S. troops, providing much-needed materials for Iraqi children while boosting the morale of the servicemembers who pass them out, Sinise said.

Rumsfeld on a Hollywood set? That must have ruffled the feathers of a good number of people there. I hope Gary Sinise doesn't get blacklisted.
Sinese has been doing terrific work with getting Iraqi kids school supplies, etc.

Gary Sinise is a good actor and I'd still say that regardless of his efforts to help our troops.
He should have received an Academy Award for his portrayal of Harry S Truman in the 1995 movie "Truman". His ability to play the part of Truman was absolutely stunning. He looked AND sounded just like Truman.

Laura doesn't get much publicity as Gary for her part, but she and Gary are good people.
Instead of being political they've just gone quietly about trying to help the Iraqi children. The generation that will determine whether the sacrifices of the current people (both allied troops and Iraqi's) will take root.
One of the good guys. I'd say he's the closest this generation has to a Jimmy Stewart or Gary Cooper.

Gary Sinise went to Highland Park High School; my sister is a childhood friend of Gary's wife, Moira. Rummy went to New Trier High School. My father-in-law was Rummy's PE teacher and JV wrestling coach. We are all connected!
This represents enormous effort for Laura Hillenbrand. Her brother is a co-worker of my husband and has often told him how severe her chronic-fatigue is. After this event, she was unable to leave the house for days, but she felt strongly about appearing and offering support. She is a great person.
