LONDON (AP) - Foreigners who preach hatred, sponsor violence or belong to extremist groups could be deported from Britain under strict new measures that Prime Minister Tony Blair announced Friday, nearly a month after suicide bombers killed 52 people on London's transit system.

Membership in extremist Islamic groups such as Hizb-ut-Tahrir would become a crime under the new measures. The group, which advocates the creation of an Islamic state in Central Asia, already is outlawed in several countries.

Blair said the government also would compile a list of Web sites, bookshops and centers that incite hatred and violence. British nationals involved with such organizations could face strict penalties. Foreign nationals could be deported, he said.

"They come here and they play by our rules and our way of life," Blair said at his monthly news conference. "If they don't, they are going to have to go."

Glad to see that the Brits have found their brass. Good for them!!

Hope we can do the same here in the USA.

Not draconian enough, but it's a start.

This, and more, should have been done on 9/12 in this country. Give me deportations, not random searches on a subway system.

Hope we can do the same here in the USA.

I would like to think so, but you could have a few thousand more Americans killed, and we'd simply get another PATRIOT Act, more thorough searches at the airports, and random bag inspections on mass transit.

Those three things, the only thing they would accomplish (besides wasting more money and throwing away our freedom/privacy), is make the gullible feel like the government is doing something.

I'm thinking a huge slingshot on the White Cliffs of Dover.

We would be real smart to do the same thing as the Brits. Send them all home before they kill someone. How can a people that believe that lying to, or killing "infidels" is alright in the eyes of Allah? Send them home now.

The fallout will cause a mass of help wanted classified ads looking for cab drivers and convenience store clerks. LOL! But seriously, great first step Tony. BTW, must be nice to have the security your island country offers. Ole George best get our borders secure first and foremost, then follow Blairs lead on the deportation.
