House Majority Leader Tom DeLay received a warm welcome during his first official visit to the city since, thanks to redistricting, he became the areas congressman.
Speaking to the La Marque Rotary Club, which saw increased attendance from neighboring clubs, DeLay spent much of the time introducing himself and his political philosophy.
He spun tales of his early days as a Fort Bend County businessman, who, while running for state office would not even admit he was a Republican, and his ascension to Majority Leader of the U.S. Congress.
Talk of replacing the federal tax system with a national sales tax, tougher standards and accountability for federal judges, border security and the issue of eminent domain seemed to resonate the audience.
He reiterated, too, the continued push for the GOP majoritys most ambitious agenda with emphasis on homeland security and border issues.
DeLay, whose 22nd Congressional District includes La Marque, portions of Texas City, Santa Fe and much of the North County, got ovations for his views about border security.
First we need to convince the American people we will secure the border, he said. Any guest worker program will come later.
He voiced his support of a proposal that would see the governor deputize people on the border to assist Border Patrol agents.
Each time the crowd, which included local Republican Party chairman Chris Stevens and a bevy of county GOP movers and shakers, interrupted DeLays comments with boisterous applause.
But, as has become the norm, DeLay couldnt come to town without meeting with protest.
Santa Fe resident John Fafoutakis was the lone picket outside Gulf Greyhound Park, where the meeting was held.
The Navy veteran who said protesting at DeLay functions was a hobby, held up a sign chastising the congressman for what he called a lack of support for veterans hospitals and medical clinics.
How come the VA has to constantly fight for its survival with these guys in Congress, said Fafoutakis. They should be taking care of veterans and each time the funding gets cut by the very people who are putting our troops in harms way again.
DeLay said the protestors anger was misplaced.
The VA has gotten the funding it needs, we have always been there for the VA and its hospitals, DeLay said.
Funny, the difference a comma makes:')
DeLay ping.
Interesting that one protestor gets so much visibility.
Why do you continue to lie about Trancedo? Here's a little clip you might read and reread many many times....

Tancredo: DeLay Charges 'Trumped-Up'
Rep. Tom Tancredo's advice that House Majority Leader Tom DeLay should consider stepping aside while ethics charges against him are resolved received wall-to-wall coverage on the Sunday morning news shows - which all but ignored Tancredo's main point: that the DeLay allegations "lack merit" and were "trumped-up."
In a statement posted to his official Web site Friday, the Colorado Republican emphasized that he believed the DeLay scandal was a bogus partisan witch hunt:
"I believe that all of the charges against Tom DeLay I have seen to date lack merit. I believe they are being leveled in the hopes of bringing him down, and with him the Republican majority," he began.
Only then did Tancredo suggest that it "may be a productive move" for DeLay to take a "temporary" leave of absence...."
I realize you are an OBLer but to continue spewing the continued lies doesn't speak well of you. No where has Trancedo suggested Delay resign. Are you becoming the OBLer's James Carville?
Now he is taking away Tancredo's leadership of the House anti-immigrant members and taking personal command.
Like the experienced whip that he is, when the final Bush reform legislation nears a vote The Hammer will deliver just like he always has.
Meantime, Tancredo jokes are all the vogue: Example from one:
"I do regret saying that when your rhetoric hit rock-bottom, you began to dig....... Well, also the remark that when you open your mouth its only to change feet, which I confess was my reaction when hearing your wipe-out Mecca idea........ And, yes I take back saying that when youre in Washington, Centennial, Colorado, where you keep your district office, is deprived of its village idiot. .........And when you use demeaning words to describe Mexicos poor who risk it all, many losing their lives, to come to the US in search of a better life, I did say that you set low personal standards for yourself and youve yet to achieve them. .........And, it was absolutely wrong of me to say that when and if your IQ reaches 50, you should sell, well, 50 was a correction, I actually said 40 when I also said that you had two brain cells - one lost and the other out looking for it;........ well, OK, and that you needed watering twice a week.........OK so it was an Angeleno who said that if you were a lunch-special in a Mexican restaurant your plate would be short the enchiladas, taco, tamale and rice, but sir, beans, as you know, can go a long way......... Oh, good golly, it was also an Angelo who said that you are like a piñata without candies. .........It does seem that we got off on the wrong foot, no, not the one in your mouth, the other one - damn, there I go again. .........Well, on the other hand, as long as it takes you two hours to watch 60 Minutes and you refuse to watch 48 Hours because you cant take two days off work there is really not much to talk about other than what a terrible disgrace you are to the entire nation you profess to love and serve."
