PRESTONSBURG, Ky. -- A disagreement over the war in Iraq between two friends ended with the fatal shooting of one of the men.
Prosecutors and Kentucky State Police determined that Douglas Moore, 65, of Martin, acted in self-defense. Police did not arrest Moore after the shooting at the Bull Creek Trade Center near Prestonsburg Thursday morning.
The victim, Harold W. Smith, 56, of Manchester, and Moore were friends who each had booths at the center. Smith was shot once in the chest and died at the scene.
They began arguing over the war, said Floyd County Coroner Roger Nelson. "I think Doug was supporting it, and this other guy was against it," he said.
Police said the argument escalated into a fight, and Smith drew a small pistol from his pocket, threatening to kill Moore. Witnesses said Moore pulled a .38-caliber pistol from his pocket and shot Smith once in the chest.
Nelson said he found "a little derringer lying adjacent to Smith's hand where he fell."

What a shocker. An anti-war guy turns violent. They never see the irony in that, do they?
The liberal shouldn't have pulled out his gun if he didn't intend to use it.
The first shot in the new Civil War?
Violent, and yet under-armed.
Old Ben's Rule #3 of firearms: "Never point your weapon at anything you don't intend to shoot"
Oh my....
"the argument escalated into a fight, and Smith drew a small pistol from his pocket, threatening to kill Moore. Witnesses said Moore pulled a .38-caliber pistol from his pocket and shot Smith once in the chest."
Wait, libs are both anti-war and anti-gun, rite? And anti-violence?
*Who* pulled it out 1st? hhmmmm.....
Gives the lie again to libs and their anti-violent behavior.
Oh well, perhaps I misjudge, and in any case, it's quite sad really.
Lucky for us they weren't arguing over Hiroshima.
Gun rule #1:
Never pull a gun on someone unless you are in the process of shooting them.
Gun rule #2:
Shoot to kill.
Two "buddies" get into an argument over Iraq and one of them feels compelled to threaten the other with A GUN?
These guys were old enough to know better, acting like gangstaz. Sheesh.
Can't fault the shooter for defending himself, but what kind of freak decides pulling a gun is a suitable way to end an argument?
Gun rule #2 - shoot to stop the threat as fast as possible. If they die in the process, that's their problem.
Rule #3 If you cap a liberal, be sure to have a throw-down derringer in your other pocket.
Ok I guess the MSM is now going to run stories trying to say the Iraq war is making friends turn against friends.
"Prosecutors and Kentucky State Police determined that Douglas Moore, 65, of Martin, acted in self-defense. Police did not arrest Moore after the shooting at the Bull Creek Trade Center near Prestonsburg Thursday morning."
- Good Call. Nice to see common sense win out in the end. Still...I'm sure this guy feels terrible about having to do what he did.
Don't bring "a little derringer" to a gun fight.
"The liberal shouldn't have pulled out his gun if he didn't intend to use it."
Well stated.
"Gives the lie again to libs and their anti-violent behavior."
Libs aren't violent, they're just stupid and pretend to be. First off...what kind of idiot pulls a gun on someone because they differ on opinion? Second...you don't pull a gun unless you are ready to use it...unles you are stupid and looking to get killed.
I have no remorse for the jackass lib. I do feel bad for his family though.
Is this really what they mean? Could it have been, for example, SW Airframe? In this case, are they using the term "pistol" to mean "handgun in general"?
Or, are they perhaps confused, and the person REALLY had a .380 SEMIAUTO (e.g. Sig P232)?
After getting yelled at by Hairofthedog, I never use the word "pistol" anymore. Instead I use "semi" or "semiautomatic pistol." LOL
