GALESBURG - A Galesburg man was arrested Wednesday afternoon for allegedly stealing over $5,000 from his employer. Steven R. Peck, 32, 455 N. Broad St., was arrested at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Public Safety Building for theft. He is accused of stealing about $5,718 from Trailways Bus Co., 14 W. Main St., where he was the manager.
According to police, the Galesburg office was audited after the corporate accounting office noticed daily deposits were not being made. The district manager told police since July 1, 16 daily deposits had not been made and so far, $5,718 was missing.
When police interviewed Peck, he allegedly admitted to taking the money, but said he had not realized how much he had taken. Peck reportedly told police he spent all the money on alcohol. Peck said his newborn son had a severe medical condition and Peck could not cope with the stress, so he started drinking.
When the officer commented that $5,700 was a lot of money to spend on alcohol, Peck said he would buy rounds for everyone in the bar.
Peck said he had admitted himself into detox and has been sober for six days. He said he planned to pay the money back to the company.
Peck is scheduled to appear in Knox County Circuit Court this afternoon for a bond hearing.
Looks like Trailways Bus Co is raking in big bucks, 16 days of deposits equals 5k.
This was one office is a small town. What would you expect?
I didn't know Trailways was still in business. I thought Greyhound bought out all their operations years and years ago.
