LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A former campaign strategist for President Bush has signed up to help Dick DeVos in his bid to become Michigan's next governor.

Matthew Dowd is the DeVos campaign's new senior adviser, the campaign announced Wednesday. DeVos, a Republican, wants to take on incumbent Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm in the 2006 election.

Dowd was a strategist and pollster for George W. Bush and Dick Cheney in the 2004 election. He previously was senior adviser to the Republican National Committee and was director of polling and media planning for Bush's 2000 presidential campaign.

Dowd is a Michigan native and still has relatives in the southeast part of the state, the DeVos campaign said.

DeVos is former president of direct sales giants Alticor Inc. and Amway Corp. His wife, Betsy DeVos, is former chairwoman of the Michigan Republican Party.

Other Republicans seeking their party's gubernatorial nomination next year are state Rep. Jack Hoogendyk of Kalamazoo and state Sen. Nancy Cassis of Novi.

Is Granholm really vulnerable or is this election a waste of time?

She's vulnerable.

I sure hope so. What do you think her weak point(s) are?

It's just my opinion. She wasn't elected in a landslide or anything and she loves the taxes that the people don't.

She's in big trouble.

Michigan is not in economic recovery but is still in a recession. Granholm (who won with 51% in 02) was always weak on social issues, but this time she can be hit hard on jobs, jobs, and jobs.

I would have to say that she's most vulnerable on taxes.

Good probably depends on the opposition too hope whoever runs against her clobbers her, we need to snag as many Gov mansions as we can or the MSM will point to a Bush loss and the emerging Dem juggernaut - they probably will anyway but what you gonna do

Thats his dad Rich DeVos. Owner of the Orlando Magic and cofounder of Amway. He's also about 80 years old.

This is his son.

Having a "D" after her name in a union state & Wayne County. That's it...but it's probably enough.

Being a union construction worker for 17 years, I know that the mentality of most union workers is that Dems are the saviors of the world, and the "working class". And that Repubs are evil, pro corporate, blood suckers.

Of course if you question any of there suppositions, they respond in generalizations and innuendo. But no, or very few "facts".

Very seldom have I found one who would actually think for themselves beyond the party line.

My husband works with a bunch of those. They're like robots, especially the union reps. He's UAW, but not by choice. There are more & more guys who are conservative, but there aren't enough of them to form a voting block.

The person who turned me on to FR was a coworker. One of the few conservatives I found in the trades. And I do mean few.
