CHICAGO, IL, United States (UPI) -- To be hip in Chicago has reached the stage of laying out $135 for a single cocktail, or $700 for tea and cognac.

Jen Hansen, spokeswoman for the Le Passage lounge said the expensive cocktail known as a Champs-d`Elysees is only ordered about once a month, but it`s on the menu for those who feel the need for it.

The drink is made with Remy Martin Louis XIII cognac, Grand Marnier, orange juice and sour mix. It`s served in a crystal cognac glass rimmed with powdered sugar, and like McDonalds, the glass can be taken home by the consumer.

"People are spending $575 on a bottle of champagne here, so it`s not out of character for someone to spend this much," Hansen said.

Not to be outdone, the Park Hyatt Hotel also offers a mysterious blend of tea and cognac for $700, the Chicago Sun-Times said.

The more you charge for something, the more chance that too-rich-for-their-own-good yuppies will snap it up!

Everclear mixed with kool-aid.

You can get that for $3 at the Circle Bar during Mardi Gras, and $85 at Le Passage lounge.

Why would anyone ruing perfectly good Remy Martin Louis XIII by mixing it with *anything*? Talk about unclear on the concept! Yet another demonstration of "too hip = idiotic"!

Why would anyone mix fine Remy Martin Louis XIII cognac with orange juice and sour mix? That would be a true waste of exquisite cognac. That would be like opening a bottle of vintage champagne to drink with a meal from Taco Johns.

I savored my bottle of tres fine champagne Remy Martin cognac for nearly 10 years enjoying it only on special occasions usually with a fine cigar.

It's not a brothel. Women just sit, drink your booze and laugh at your jokes. Fully clothed. Japanese businessmen eat it up.

No kidding! There was a bar I'd go to in college where we'd just order "sours." The bartender would mix whatever alcohol he felt like mixing with the sour mix, and it tasted the same every time!

Those “Genuine Imitation” powdered drink mixes are all the same. With recent changes in some State alcohol laws, they are the only way to mix some drinks. Here in Virginia no drink served can legally contain more than two ounces of hard booze. Try making a Long Island Iced Tea with just two ounces of booze.
I understand why the mixes are used – but I sure don’t see where outrageous prices are justified, except that managers will charge what the public is willing to pay.
