Girl battles flying bat!
By:De Anna Sheffield
Seminole, Florida -- Last Friday night in Seminole, 17-year-old Teresa Shields was heading home after work, when she got a strange surprise.
Teresa Shields, bitten by bat "I was driving down the street, and something flew in my window, I heard it come through, and it landed in the backseat. I wasn't sure, I thought a little kid threw something plastic, because it (the object) looked brown and plastic. I turned on the light, I reached back and it hissed. I said, oh my goodness! I dropped it. It spread its wings out and I saw it was a bat!"
The bat bit her between her fingers, and as she headed home, she called her parents on her cell phone. Her dad, who is a doctor, knew they had to save the bat to have it tested for rabies.
Dr. Stephen Shields, daughter bitten by bat "I opened the passenger door and it was in the backseat, I had a broom in my hand. I was anticipating it might fly out, so I was trying to pin it before it got out. So I pinned it on the seat and swept it out. Momma was on hand with a Tupperware piece and trapped it in the yard."
The battle with the bat ended, and luckily Teresa's wound didn't break through the skin; she's doing just fine. Except for the fact that she has a new nickname--BatGirl!

If only the girl in the story had one of those she could have batted the bat.
Yet another weird story from the Sunshine State. What is it about Florida?
If a bat hissed at me, I do believe I'd utter something besides "Oh, my goodness."
LOL. I think they're cute. We have 'em flying around the yard at dusk every night, snarfing up insects. Cool little critters.
No I didn't..
...I don't nip at hands.
;-[ vlah! vlah!
*chuckle*
I've tossed grasshoppers into the air for them.
Crickets are fun because they can't fly, but you toss them wrong you may get a bat in the face should the cricket fall back in your direction.
Me too. Though they eat insects at night, they're nothing more than rats with wings that can really mess your house up!
Some of them are cute, like these Rodrigues fruit bats with their fox-like faces.
Vampire bats are ugly, though. ;)
Last year my wife was came into contact with a deseased fawn and had to have rabies shots. $1,800.00 worth. I call that a big deal.
Good one! LOL!
Back in the day when I worked at a Ranch, vampire and fruit bats were very commonly found flying around in the evenings.
If a bat flew into a cabin or into the main cabin, a pretty good sized "stun gun of death" (as the small children called it) was given to one of the adults or one of the teenagers in the "Ranch Staff" to shoot the bat. On that given day, a young teenager was given the gun, and he killed the bat within two shots. (Very good aimer)
When the bat was succesfully shot down from the air, an adult carefully grabbed it and put it in a bag, and depending on wether it was still alive, let the adults do away with it, or if it was dead, let the children play with it. This one time (and only allowed time) the children took a long 2.5 inch nail and a hammer, and proudly nailed the dead bat to a random tree next to the lumber pile (also some ten yards from the main cabin) for the staff and wandering visitors to see.
Bats = rats with wings
Squirrels = rats with fuzzy tails
Raccoons = rats with a mask
Deer = rats with long legs and ticks
Of all the above, the bats are probably the least offensive since they do eat mosquitoes.
There was a show on PBS the other night that showed video of actual vampire bats that normally suck the blood of other animals, but in South America, they bite and suck the blood of PEOPLE.
Amazing video as the bats came in to feed on people as they slept.
Slow fricken newsday when crap like this makes the cut!
Oh yes, they are cute when flying around the yard. It's a whole other story when they're flying around the living room.
And if the bat was walking instead, it could have been a tickle fight...
Aren't bats generally known for their ability to fly??
