I don't think the war is over. There is never going to be a formal surrender signed on the deck of the Missouri. There is no formal enemy. That is what makes this so difficult.

As for the source, I will work on that today at work. I saw a program on post war Germany and Japan. It was quite interesting the difference between how the U.S. dealt with the residual Nazis versus how the Russians dealt with them. If a Russian was killed in their sector, they rounded up a select number of local villagers and shot them. I'll see if I can find a link. I would like to read more on it.
