Santana Performs Concert in Hiroshima

Aug. 2, 2005 - Saying he was on a "mission to ignite peace," guitar legend Carlos Santana played before a sold-out crowd at a concert Tuesday to mark the 60th anniversary of the world's first atomic bomb attack.

The concert was one of dozens of events this city is holding ahead of the memorial ceremony on Saturday. About 50,000 people, including Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, are expected to gather in Peace Memorial Park for Saturday's anniversary.

"It is an honor to be here and to be of service with our music," Santana told the "Emissaries for Peace" concert crowd of about 2,000. "We want to give birth to a world with peace in our lifetime."

Santana, joined by jazz greats Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, visited Hiroshima's Peace Memorial Park earlier in the day. Last week, the trio played a similar concert in Nagasaki, which was devastated by an atomic bomb three days after the attack on Hiroshima.

About 200,000 people were killed in the blasts. Japan surrendered on Aug. 15, 1945, bringing World War II to a close.

Shouldn't he have played at Los Alamos? Los Alamos brought peace, not Hiroshima.

About 200,000 people were killed in the blasts.

They never mention the fact that the bomb saved millions of American and Japanese lives.

Interesting how all the PC-left obsesses about Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and Dresden - has Carlos Santana played a "peace concert" to honor the 300,000+ the Japanese army slaughtered in Nanking???? Or the MILLIONS slaughtered by the Japanese military all over Asia and the Pacific? Or the many many more MILLIONS slaughtered by Hitler or Stalin or Mao?????

No, the PC-left only staggers up out of its stupor to concern itself with bashing the USA.

Silly utopians that need to get real.

There will be NO "world peace" till after He comes.

Were I live, we have a anti-American black cable program.

They had a segment with Carlos were he was chuckling over the defeat of Custard.

To me, Mr. Santana is ungrateful and anti-American.

Just my opinion.

I may not agree with all of what he says, but he still is a god.

Good point. Just like I don't see Amenesty International bitching about conditions in North Korean jails.

Please explain. I never understood why anoyone liked Santana. He has two songs right? Black magic woman, and some other one, I don't remember the name. And he has lived off of them for 30 years.

You've got to change your evil ways, baby.

That's the other one. I like more songs by Pat Benatar, Blondies, and the Bee Gees. If they're not Gods (far from it) then Santana isn't.

Carlos Santana is a left wing idiot who goes around preaching peace while wearing a Che T-shirt. Hypocrites can't understand that Che was the most blood thirsty killer in the western hemisphere in the 20th century. God I hate lefties.

I like Carlos' music. Always have.

I really don't care about his politics. It doesn't change my appreciation of his musical ability.

Which is two songs in 30 years.

Totally agree. One of the best guitarists ever, Santana. I wish he'd keep his politics to himself though.

He really needs to be on a "mission to re-ignite his career".

Yo yo Commie Ha! is the other semi hit song (I think.) Your regular one hit wonder with one or two what used to be called in the record biz followups.

Affirmative action in record industry for ya.
