...scandal of Grace?

I've never heard this before, what is this supposed to mean? Why would anyone refer to God's grace as a scandal?

Grace is "scandalous" because people who accept God's Grace are guaranteed a place in Heaven. They have not worked or earned that Grace it is "scandalous" because it seems unfair to those who think they can work for the Grace or Salvation.

The Jews in St. Paul's time, most certainly, would have considered God's unmerited favor "scandalous." Kinda like what the older brother thought in the story of the Prodigal son.

The 'scandal' of grace is the simple fact that it flies in the face of all religious attempts at sanctification - it scandalizes them. Grace is a scandal to every attempt we make to be just before God on our merits. Only when one realizes that efforts at being justified by works are hopeless does grace become 'scandal-less' for believers in the redeeming work of Christ. I hope Bono's book, regardless of his other victories or failings, opens a lot of hearts and minds to a reality beyond what the mainstream media tries to make Christianity out to be...
