Ukrainian oil exports dropped 58.9 percent to 91,796 tons in the first half of this year against the same period in 2004, according to RBC. Gasoline exports advanced 5 percent to 336,750 tons. Ukraine exported 667,332 tons of diesel fuel in the period in question - a 20.2-percent decrease against the first half of 2004. As reported earlier, the country's government banned export of crude oil produced in Ukraine for April to December 2005.

Ukraine produces no oil - why should it be a party to Russian intermediaries who import from Russia and cook the books?

Damn straight they stopped this nonsense.

First, Ukraine does produce oil. Do you do ANY research before posting?

As for cooking the books, go talk to Tymoshenko who made $11.5 BILLION cooking books as head of the Gas Sector under Kuchma.

As for cutting oil exports, Mr. Socialist, it's the socialist government of Ukraine telling corporations they can't export to better markets and must stay in Ukraine and sell their oil at low government set prices, thus usually taking losses.

Dude, do you have any clue about what's going on there? Your blind support for the socialists (who YOU claimed were doing a great job because their GDP growth was 4%, never mind that last year's was 12.7% so they've killed growth by 75%) is sickening.

"First, Ukraine does produce oil"
What do you mean, sunflower oil?

Ukraine is by far a net petro and gas importer and all these re-exports were lining the pockets of Russian oligarch communists.

Wrong. First, Ukraine is a producer and its production meets about half of its demand. In a capitalist system, if the local market is unprofitable, you export out to a market that is profitable. In Ukraine the commodity price for oil is set at an artificial low by the socialists in power, thus compared to the world market, Ukraine is very unprofitable. Capitalism would dictate that oil produced would be sent out until the price of oil in the country rises to that of the world standard (plus or minus some minor local economic adjustments). Of course this can't happen when the government freezes prices at rediculously low levels.

So what's the government to do? It orders the oil companies NOT to export and thus sell internally. Well this won't work either. Because the producers will stop producing, period. They will choose to invest for the future by conserving their resources and waiting for the government to collapse or change their policies. Thus, short of mass nationalization (which your gal Tymoshenko is backing) Ukrainian oil production will fall off totally, forcing Ukraine to import even more and those imports will have to be at world prices, thus making the country even poorer and more dependent.

You're welcome for the economics lesson.

lining the pockets of Russian oligarch communists.

Can your mind understand the term OxyMoron? Oligarch and Communist are mutually exclusive, like a fundimentalist Christian leftist.
