A passenger on the Air France jet that skidded off a runway while landing at Toronto's Pearson International Airport Tuesday said people were "running like crazy" after the plane came to an abrupt stop.
All 309 people aboard the Airbus A340 survived the ordeal. Fourteen people suffered minor injuries in the accident.
"It was very rough weather as we approached the runway. I sort of thought we were coming in a little too fast," said passenger Roel Bramar, describing the landing in an interview with CBC News.
"But the landing appeared to be OK until it sort of seemed that the captain wasn't able to apply sufficient braking power."
"We had a hell of roller coaster going down the ravine," he said.
"All I could think of was 'Get off!'"
Bramar said he was seated at the very back of the plane and was the second one off the plane, exiting from an emergency chute.
"Everyone around me was running like crazy," he said, adding that he thought the rest of the passengers were safe.
The plane landed during a severe thunderstorm.
"Just as we landed the lights turned off and that's unusual. I'm sure the bad weather was responsible," Bramar said.
"I sort of got the idea the captain wanted to lower the plane as quickly as possible because there was such a rough storm."
