MOSCOW, Aug 2 (Reuters) - Moscow on Tuesday said journalists for the U.S. television channel ABC would be barred from working in Russia after the channel broadcast an interview with Chechen rebel leader Shamil Basayev.
It said accreditations for ABC's reporters would not be renewed and that, in the mean time, they would be banned from talking to any Russian officials.
Free speech advocates have repeatedly criticised President Vladimir Putin's government for reining in the Russian press, but this appeared to be the first action against a major Western media organisation.
"ABC is now unwelcome to contact any Russian state organisations or bodies," the Foreign ministry said in a statement. "A decision was taken that at the end of their expiry period, the accreditations of the workers of this company will not be renewed."
Russia was outraged by the interview with Basayev, who is Russia's most wanted man and blamed for the Chechens' bloodiest attacks on Russian troops and civilians.
Basayev has claimed responsibility for orchestrating the Beslan attack last September when 300 hostages died -- half of them children -- after a three-day siege.
Fair enough.
If only we could kick 'em out of the US.
We should try that here.
Another example of the media coddling the terrorists. ABC hasn't been welcome at my house for quite a while.
I don't know why Dubya even allows half these bozos press creds.
Good.
The sad thing is that we don't use the law to pull the credentials o all traitors in the American press.
This will hopefully hurt their ratings and bottom line more then the money and ratings they got for showing this mass murderer of children and pregnant women.
The MSM has become so accustomed to crapping on America, it has forgotten that it can't do that just anywhere. It just proves that the MSM's anti-Americanism is solely a matter of ignorance, not enlightenment.
D*mn!
Guess this means no "Disneyland-Kazan"
A.A.C.
Thank you!
My biggest complaint about Bush is that he has done absolutely NOTHING to counteract the subversion, treason, and collaboration carried out by the MSM.
Great, between our idiot journalists and their idiot journalists a pissing war. Yup, all in the name of unity and the good fight. If this was how WW2 was fought, we'd all be speaking German now.
I am glad to hear this words from American people
Misha, these are conservative Americans. Don't expect anything like that from liberals. They will tell you that we need to understand the root causes, blah-blah-blah.
This is hardly a proper synopsis of the tragedy at Beslan. This man is responsible for organizing the Beslan attack where the men were rounded up to help create barricades, and then shot; where young girls were filmed being raped by the terrorists, then the film sent to Putin to mock him; where the hostages were left to sweat and suffer in a gymnasium packed with explosives; and where (it is believed) that escaping terrorists highjacked ambulances and murdered the injured in them, some of whose bodies have never been found.
I am very clear in my assertion that Russia is neither a friend nor an ally, but I will say this... if Putin were ever too weak to lift a gun, I would happily hold his arm up for him so he could shoot this vermin...
Let me make a couple things clear about "Komsolskaya Pravda" - a.) it's owned by a Greek "communist" tycon, b.) it's a tabloid, and c.) if they're making this claim they'll probably just make up an interview with OBL (what's he going to do? Sue them?), and d.) they'll be opening a huge can of worms for themselves because the FSB and Putin's administration will be on them like stink on you-know-what if they do this (they'll be grilled to cough up any contact info locational data on OBL).
ABC is disgusting. They aired pictures the Brits requested they not do (compromising their activities on the terrorist attacks) and now Bashaev. And, when you get right down to it, it's really about $$$$. Controversy sells and that means more viewers and that means more revenue from advertisers.
After they make a friendly interview with Osama.
