No one can be taken seriously who says something like that..
BINGO. I know several veterans who experienced "Jap" treatment first hand - one being a Bataan survivor. Another fellow piloted an LST bringing Marines into Iwo Jima. None of them are as enlightened as modern professors at Universities.
I must be going senile. Thanks for the correction.
Yes he does, twice in the first two sentences. I didn't bother to read much further, as he had established his lack of credibility.
" that famous B-29 bomber which dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki Japan"
and
" The Smithsonian has completed a cosmetic restoration of the Enola Gay, the plane that dropped the bombs"
We already established the plane error.
My Late Father had a role in Bockscar's modifications needed in order to carry Fat Boy. The bomb was so big it would not fit inside the bomb bay. The bomb attachments were extended and if I remember correctly, the landing gear was extended as well to have enough ground clearance.
For the rest of his life he was proud of his small role in ending that horror.
Is it ok with you if historians use the term "Jew" for Jewish person? I've never understood the disconnect on that one. Jap is derogatory, Jew is fine, and long as you don't say it as Joooo.
And as for those hand-wringers, never let 'em forget just who the hell started the war.
Do Jewish folks really think the word "Jew" is a slur? We've used it for so long and with no ill intent at church and Bible study..
However, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out "Jap" is definitely a slur.
Would you prefer he called 'em "Nips"?
I'm sure your "professors," wherever they hold forth, are the final arbiters for political correctness. You have learned your lessons well my child.
For the record, I have known many WW II veterans who fought in the Pacific, and many of them don't/didn't use the term "Jap." They used the more descriptive "Nipponese M---F---ers."
Have a good one, kid.
"Jap" is an abbreviation. "Slant" is a slur.
Walk up to an Asian-looking American sometime and say, "Hey, Jap," then get back to me.
My Dad was a Marine on a troop ship to Japan to be part of the invasion force when the bombs were dropped. Instead of invading, he was part of the occupation force. He brought home a silk parachute from Japan that was made into my Mom's wedding dress in 1947.
If it hadn't been for those bombs, I wouldn't be typing this right now!
May he Rest In Peace.
In case you haven't noticed, we live in an age in which even neutral words are misconstrued by anyone who really wants to get their panties in a knot. Hell, even using the word "niggardly" gets people in hot water these days...even though that word, too, is not a racial slur.
So please...don't be so painfully naïve. It's embarrassing to watch.
bombs? I believe Bock's Car dropped the Nagasaki bomb. someone correct me if I am wrong.
Nope, you are right on.

If you seek the "TRUTH", then your sense of right and wrong are informed by the thoughts and actions of the people who were there, at that specific historical moment.
If "racial slurs" keep you from considering accounts and documents out of moral outrage, you ARE the sort of person who could claim that Truman was wrong to use the bombs, and you would be wrong.
PS, never EVER read Mark Twain, it would offend your superior morality.
You believe the Pacific war was a "...a racist war of the first order"?
Can you explain exactly what you mean by that? I really am curious.
Were we racist towards them? Were they racist towards us? Both sides racist towards each other?
Or did they only attack us ONLY because we were mostly caucasian? Did we fight them all the way across the Pacific ONLY because they were orientals?
Do you suppose the military people who fought against the Japanese did it so strenously due to unrelenting racism?
Are you contrasting the Pacific war with the "more civilized" European theatre?
I really am curious, I would like to know what you mean.
