VIEW: Space industry has to go private in future

The only reason the United States's — or for that matter any country's — space programme has been kept in government hands for so long is because it was inextricably linked with defence concerns and the bogey of "national security". It's hardly any secret that the intercontinental ballistic missiles are nothing but modified rockets, while satellites were primarily built to eavesdrop and snoop on the affairs of enemy countries

Agreed, but there has to be profit to make worthwhile the risk and effort.

But it's very true that the reason we are all driving around in automobiles, flying in airplanes, living in air conditioned homes, using electricity, etc. is not because government decreed that those things should happen.

I agree.. I think the Government should give out tax breaks to the space industry...

That's my view, too. Only let's make that the present instead of the future. We can't afford a moon base or to play buck rogers on mars.

India has to do some serious work in the area of the philosophy of space development. So do we, but at least we have been doing stuff even if we don't know why.
