Gay Activist Launches 'Draft Hillary' Bid

(Miami, Florida) Bob Kunst wants Hillary Clinton back in the White House, this time as President. Kunst, considered one of the fathers of the American gay liberation movement in the 60s and 70s on Wednesday launched a national Draft Hillary campaign.

"The only candidate who's left who can possibly take down Bush - not in the violent sense - is Hillary Clinton," says Kunst.

The Polls show the 61 year old Kunst may be right. A recent survey showed her leading all of the declared Democratic contenders, but still trailing the President. A Clinton Bush match up would give Bush the presidency 48 - 41 percent. That is still considerably better than former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean would do. Dean would lose 45-34 percent, the survey found. The gap widens even more with the other Democratic candidates.

Nevertheless, Kunst believes in the nearly 15 months until election day Clinton top Bush. So do a lot of other Democrats. At Monday's West Indian American Day Parade in New York where she was a marcher, hundreds of people along the parade route yelled at Senator to throw her hat in the ring. Kunst was also at the parade with a placard saying 'Draft Hillary".

"She waved and smiled when she saw the sign," Kunst says.

Nine Democrats are currently seeking the Democratic presidential nomination. Kunst calls them "lackluster".

"She's the only Democrat who has both the clout and the notoriety, and the lightning-rod reaction, who can actually take on Bush," Kunst said.

Kunst said he believes the Democratic National Convention next summer in Boston will be deadlocked and that is when party members can get behind Clinton.

Kunst has been an activist most of his adult life. In 1977, the Miami man introduced the city's original gay rights ordinance and saw it unanimously passed on first reading 9-0 by the Metro Commission. He then faced an ugly referendum campaign that saw the ordinance repealed by voters.

In 2000 he unsuccessfully ran for governor of Florida as an Independent. His political action group The Oral Majority accuses President Bush of stealing the 2000 election from Al Gore, and has repeatedly dogged the Bush family, including the president's father, the first President Bush, with noisy protests.

Kunst says he is not discouraged by Clinton's insistence she will not be a candidate.

"I think Hillary has to make this statement, but I believe if the grass roots demands it, that it's a totally different picture ... From that direction, I think she's open" to the idea, Kunst said.

To gain grassroots support he has set up a website: www.hillarynow.com where people can sign a petition urging the former first lady to run
