I would say a couple of things are contributing this...

First of all, the Pacific has been relatively quiet the past few years. Add to that there have been several Cape Verde Hurricanes, which are generally the most powerful. Doesn't necessarily mean anything, but I gaurantee that they didn't take that into account.

Secondly, the instrumentation to detect and classify hurricanes and their strengths is LIGHTYEARS ahead of where it was even 20 years ago.

third and final, since the first scientist is from MIT, you KNOW he wants to do a hit piece on W whenever he can get a chance.

If prolonged warming trends occurred in the past, without human contributions, it stands to reason it can happen again, or is possibly even 'still' happening.

We don't have the ability to oxygenate a planet, but are convinced we can do the reverse or similar by accident.

Put this back in Al's book where it belongs.

I'm very sure the older members of this board will happily inform their fellows about the murderious hurricanes of the 1950's and 1960's. The fellow is using far too small of a data sample to fulfill his own preconceived notions as to what is happening.

Ten years ago, he might have blamed it on the hole in the Ozone, ten years from now it will be cow farts from Argentina and Brazil. Junk science, junk results - but I'll guarantee that he'll keep this publishing on his resume so he'll sound even more authoritative on his next publication.

I don't know if I can find a link, but I've read that it's pretty well established that Atlantic hurricanes go in approximately 40-year cycles: 20 years relatively mild, 20 years relatively harsh. I first read about this maybe 10 years ago in the WSJ and I've seen several articles on it in the intervening years.

Actually the decade of 1941-1950 is the grandaddy of hurricane decades when it comes to US strikes.
@4 US strikes that decade with 10 of them major (cat 3, 4 or 5).

No other decade comes close post 1950. However from 1876-1890 there were 5 years with better than 10 hurricanes in each year. This was the busiest period of time on record. Another poster above pointed out that in years past before technology and the Weather Channel!...many probably occurred without notice.
