A Coronal Mass Ejection is Heading Toward Earth After an X-Class Solar Explosion

Solar Explosion Directed Away from the Earth -- July 29th

AURORA ALERT: A coronal mass ejection (CME) is heading toward Earth following an X-class explosion from sunspot 792 on July 30th: movie. Auroras are possible when the CME arrives on July 31st or August 1st. The display, if there is one, shouldn't be intense; the CME was not squarely Earth-directed, which reduces its likely impact.

SUNSPOTS: Sunspot 792 poses a growing threat for Earth-directed explosions--and that's not all. At least one more active region could emerge in the days ahead. Towering magnetic fields jutting over the sun's eastern limb--the same place sunspot 792 came from--signal a new batch of sunspots approaching.

Not that I know of. He is a great guy, though.

I just read Larry Niven's short story, The Inconstant Moon, about a suddden and catastrophic increase in Solar output. The story said that some of the Apollo Moon samples had been melted by a sudden blast of heat within the last 100,000 years. Is that really true or just part of a good science fiction story? I'm gonna ask some of my buddies at Johnson Space Center about the samples.

Why do I feel vaguely dirty after reading the title?

It's a solar flare, not an explosion. At X-1 it's strong but there have been many more stronger this year. And because it wasn't earth facing, it'll probably do nothing. As the group rotates towards us, that will probably change.

Interesting the amount of activity when we are supposed to be entering/in a solar minimum.

Is this Ed Dames' 'kill shot'?

Please expand on that / point us to a source; this cat is curious.

(yeah, I know I could Google it but I thought I'd give you the privilege of posting a great source since you are "in the know")

A few years ago on the Art Bell Show Ed 'Dead Babies' Dames said that the sun would let a giant flare off toward earth that would kill off much of the life and that would be disastrous for whatever remained. ZOT! Since then the X flare incidents have been followed closely. Disruption of space satellites has been observed. As if seeing it coming would make any difference.

Dames will be on Coast2Coast tonight. Fortuitous interview? I have difficulty believing in coincidences.

By the way, you may have beautiful auroras up there in Canada.

The ultimate Viking Kittie event, eh? Thanks for the clarification. I guess we'd have to already be in one of Strangelove's caves to survive "the big one."

Dames included that in his prediction. He said that the survivors would live in caverns and eat algae.

I wish the local talk radio show still carried C2C--the Canadian version of the FCC took it off the air b/c of complaints about hate speech, I believe (??). Apparently a host was making judgmental remarks about an "ethnic group" (Muslims, probably, but I'm just guessing). They never even told the whole story, as far as I know. Even just repeating the remarks would have re-offended the group, apparently. *insert eye-rolling smiley*

By the way, you may have beautiful auroras up there in Canada.

I once saw the Northern lights while driving along the St. Lawrence in the Gaspe peninsula. It was incredible--gorgeous blue flashes. Truly a humbling sight to see.

Pictured below is our sun in a shot taken on August 3rd. The large dark area at the top is giant cornonal hole. A solar wind stream flowing from the indicated coronal hole will pass to the north of Earth today.

The bright spot in the center is Sunspot 792. poses a continuing threat for X-class solar flares. Because the sun's rotation is turning the 'spot more and more toward Earth, any explosions in the days ahead should be Earth-directed. Spaceweather.com
