No one in the media would go to jail to protect any Republican. The information had to come from someone the MSM likes - either a fellow reporter, a dem CIA agent, or a dem who's still in the administration. Though I agree with you they would not go to jail for a Republican
But here's a thought .. if they out Powell .. then they start to out the rest who are behind this set up .. and IMO, this was a set up
Powell could very well be a part of the puzzle .. but he is not the only part .. there are MANY pieces to it
This was a group of people that cooked up this scheme

Carl Ford fits in here somewhere. He would fit Novak's description of 'administration official' who was 'no partisan gunslinger' since he worked for John Glenns Presidential Campaign in 1984 and was appointed by President Bush in May 2001 to his position as Assistant Secretary of State for Intelligence and Research. He is the one that sent the Plame/Niger memo with all the "s is for secret" marks on it to Powell. And to complete the circle, he was John Bolton's chief critic (which lead to the delay in a vote on confirmation). Note this paragraph in a Kristof article published on Tuesday, July 15, 2003 (after Novak article but before Korn's) titled "16 Words, and Counting" The administration hard liner is John Bolton.
"While the scandal has so far focused on Iraq, the manipulations appear to be global. For example, one person from the intelligence community recalls an administration hard-liner's urging the State Department Bureau of Intelligence and Research to state that Cuba has a biological weapons program. The spooks refused, and Colin Powell backed them."
