WASHINGTON - Sen. Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii, an Army veteran who lost his right arm in World War II, criticized Republicans on Saturday for not doing enough to help troops fighting in or returning from Iraq.
In the Democrats' weekly radio address, Inouye said Senate Republicans were focusing on legislation sought by the gun lobby while ignoring the needs of troops.
On Tuesday, the Senate put off completion of a $491 billion defense bill to act on the National Rifle Association's top priority: shielding gun manufacturers and dealers from liability suits stemming from gun crimes.
"For years, we've heard the president and congressional Republicans speak eloquently about honoring our troops," Inouye said. "But this week - when push came to shove - their priorities were different."
He added: "Our men and women who have served should not worry about funding for health care year after year, and our soldiers on the front lines should get the resources they need.
"Our Congress could consider our men and our women in uniform as our nation's top priority."
The gun bill cleared the Senate 65-31 Friday, with Inouye in opposition.
Both the GOP (RNC) and the WH have done a terrible job at continually pointing out to the American public why we are in this fight and all of our daily successes.
There is no intensity out of the RNC and only slightly better intensity out of the WH at getting the facts out about the GWOT and our successes.
We ask our soldiers to fight 24/7 in some of the toughest conditions known to man...and yet our lazy as$ RNC and WH PR machines can't seem to show even an ounce of intensity at setting the record straight!
D*amn right our fighting men deserve better (irregardless of what the fools in the DNC spout off).
The growing HYPOCRISY of the radical left just continues. Who was it that decimated our military, miltary morale and spending on support for the military over his eight HORRIBLE years in the White House??? Reducing the military by almost 50% ???
Inouye, why don't you go back and PUBLICY REVIEW what your reprobate, impeached, anti-military President did to this country??? F-ING HYPOCRITE!!!
Put a hat on it, Danno.
Yep Senator
Harp on how the NRA is being catered to. Yeah..that's the way to impress red state voters..
*snore* Now we have to listen to this unknown from Hawaii? He doesn't have the worst or (needless to say) the best voting record. Just another mouthpiece, I guess.
How does gun control support our troops? I understand your rant but supporting gun control to support our troops doesn't make sense. The criminals are libel for crimes not the gun maker.
I am in 100% agreement with you here (without a doubt and anyone who is willing to be intellectually honest has to be in agreement as well) -
As my post said "irregardless" of what the silly DEM's are saying......(and then I pointed out where the GOP and WH ARE truly letting our Troops down).
The Sen is not unknown. He was one of the toughest yet the most fair questioners of LtCol Ollie North USMC during the Iran Contra Ivestigations. He is also a pretty barely left of center Dem. Suggest you do a little investigation on the Sen's background.
dem/libs...the saga continues as they continue to make asses of themselves.
I got so mad before when I saw a couple of old bats heading to a war protest of some kind. One moron was carrying a sign saying "torture is US policy." If that isn't an attack on American service people then I don't know what is. And I'm guessing these protestors are not Republicans.
Say what you want but Inouye is 100% right, only wrong referring to the military troops. The troops that he should be referring to are the ones that put the GOP in power in the first place! These worthless pussys have been doing nothing but betraying and letting us down thanks to dishrag leadership from the likes of McCain, Lott, Frist!
or Veterans either
