Wasted Time At Work Costing Companies Billions
Salary.com ^ | July 2005 | Salary.com, America Online

For many American workers today, time's a wastin' ...According to a new survey by America Online and Salary.com, the average worker admits to frittering away 2.09 hours per 8-hour workday, not including lunch and scheduled break-time. As a matter of practice, companies assume a certain amount of wasted time when determining employee pay. However, the America Online / Salary.com survey indicates that employees are wasting about twice as much time as their employers expect. Salary.com calculated that employers spend $759 billion per year on salaries for which real work was expected, but not actually performed.

WASTE MANAGEMENT

The biggest distraction for respondents? Personal Internet use. 44.7% of the more than 10,000 people polled cited web surfing as their #1 distraction at work. Socializing with co-workers came in second at 23.4%. Conducting personal business, "spacing out," running errands, and making personal phone calls were the other popular time-wasting activities in the workplace...

WHO WASTES THE MOST TIME?

Who tends to waste the most time at work?

* Men vs. Women: Men and women waste about the same amount of time per day. This, despite the fact that most HR managers surveyed suspected that women wasted more time at work than men.

* Youngsters vs. Seniors: As the following statistics show, the older people are, the less time they waste at work:...

Which industries account for the most wasted time? [Insurance is #1]...

HOW DOES YOUR STATE RANK?
Where does the most work-time get wasted? Regionally, the most time appears to be wasted in the Midwest, while the least appears to be wasted in the South. The biggest time wasters reside in Missouri, Indiana, and Kentucky. Workers in South Carolina, Rhode Island, and Hawaii slack off the least....

No, it's too short - because in a public school a lot of time is spent on things that don't exist in homeschool. Actual time spent on task - learning - is never enough in the public schools.

We may be talking about two different things - or the same thing in different ways. No question that most of the day is spent on non-academic things (much of it idiotic) at public schools. Eliminating all of that would make the day shorter without losing any educational value. There is also a shortage of true instruction and true academics. Adding that would lengthen the day.

It is my contention, though, that a full academic curriculum can be taught (and learned) in a shorter day than public schools generally require today. And, again, I believe the length of the day is not nearly as relevant as what is accomplished during that day. Your idea of just teaching more once the planned lesson is done - maybe, but only within limits. If we've set a standard, and the kids have met it, that is not a reason to punish them with overtime. Kids who want more, yes. As a general rule, no.

But I know I'm talking about fantasyland...

I agree with you. But I did not mean "punishment" by "learning" -- for example, would there be value in having young kids be fluent in English and some other 2nd language if other standards are already met? I think so, judging by the need our country has for foreign translators... kids learn much quicker than adults in many respects, and that precious time should not be wasted on what you and I both agree are non-academic matters.

If people in South Carolina slack off the least things must be terrible elsewhere. I have seen some unbelievable cases here. I have seen some who can fritter away an eight hour shift without doing one hour of honest work. The main problem is that employers seem to be afraid to distinguish betwen people who work and those who don't, it is pretty much the same pay for all. At my job I have seen someone who worked like a madman and was superbly competent leave and go elsewhere for a little more money and the management hires new hires now at only fifty eight cents per hour less than this man was paid. Six of these new hires can train for a year and all together will not be able to do what the one man who left could do but they could not come up with even one more dollar an hour to keep him. This is idiocy.

I believe there was a time when the average woman actually worked more efficiently than the men but at my current job we have not one woman out of the whole bunch who is worth her keep. The men do most of the work while the women pretend to work.

I don't know about fantasy games but some of them definitely DO talk about which chick they would like to do and many of them talk about which man they would like to do. If you think otherwise you obviously don't pay attention.

And hell, businesses have made it plain that they have no loyalty toward their workers any longer. Why should their workers provide loyalty unrequited?>>>>>>>>

Two things "almost" brought the IBM Corporation to its knees (in the 1980-1990 timeframe). Affirmative action and the free use of the Personal Computer (for Internet browsing and personal business). IMHO

Foreign language instruction should start at younger ages than it is currently offered (in most schools.) And all I meant by "punishment" was making them stay longer - I just believe it should be based on standards, not time. And right now it's all about putting in your time. It sounds like we pretty much agree on things - I suspect we could plan and run a pretty good school... and thanks on the screen name! It's my attempt at a silly play on "cooler heads prevailing." (Assuming the kids still use "phat" the way we used to use "cool")

The men do most of the work while the women pretend to work.

I have heard this complaint over and over, not from the men but from women over 60! They say they worked their asses off to compete with men when they still had to, way back when. Now, they say, younger women have so many workplace civil rights protections that there is almost no fear of dismissal, and they are working lazier than ever.

That is just about the way I see it! We had one very attractive 32 year old come in and do a great job for a short while but she cussed more than a drunk sailor, after a short time she reverted to her true self, coming in with a hangover or still intoxicated, not bothering to come to work anytime she felt like it, coming in late some days and making up for it by leaving early. This went on for months until human resources sat her down for a talk, the very next day she didn't bother to come to work! She was finally fired months after a man would have been kicked out.

Let me add a postscript to my last post, lest anyone think this woman was doing something where it didn't really matter, she had a job that must be filled twenty four hours a day. Failure to man her post could cause the complete shutdown of a huge factory that runs continously every day of the year.

Everything is about illegal immigration, isn't it. Even if it is no way mentioned, it's about illegal immigration.

Everything would be overstatement. A great many things however are caused by illegal immigration.
Am I correct to take from your post that you favor illegal immigration?
