This nine week basic training course, is it for all soldiers or just for those who will be assigned to non-combat arms units? I heard the Army has separate training facilities for the two groups. Is the training for combat arms soldiers different?

"Is the training for combat arms soldiers different?"

You're asking the wrong guy.
I'm a Marine.

Volunteering for the Draft was the way to go.

For me it was the only way to go.
Dad wanted me to follow in his footsteps, and mom wanted me to marry a “nice” girl – one of her friends’ daughters. I wanted to get out of Small Farmtown USA and see something of the world. By volunteering for the draft they could blame my Friends and Neighbors instead of me.

I went through Navy Boot Camp in 1947 and I wouldn't trade that experience for anything!

We Were Soldiers was undoubtedly one of the best movies about the Viet Nam War and the men who fought it that has ever been made. I also enjoyed the book. We were Soldiers Once, and Young, by Harold G. Moore.

"It was already here when I retired in 1986."
Looking back I have to agree. Seemed I was a dinosaur the last few years. I just thank God I was out by the time Clinton came along.

I agree. Soldiers didn't go to the rifle range or gunnery cause there wasn't enough ammo.

"My son kind of followed in my footsteps only he's a real soldier."

Our sons make us proud. When our son went into the
Marines, I wondered if he was going to stay in the
stray dogs squads, he was so incompetent.

Since being in, he spent one deployment in Ramadi. He was
given a combat citation for his SAW gunner skills and execution of battle formation cover.

When he came home, they took his SAW gun away from him and promoted him to fire team leader. Now they're getting ready to promote him to corporal. I Look back on the kind of kid he was--we always loved him and all--and rejoice in who he has become.

Yes, our sons do us proud.

By the way, leadpenny. Is that your handle because
you were born in '43? If you were, I was, too.

not to deman your sir Eric--But how much of that came OJT ina combat zone-and how much was training -that may have saved a few-if they had recieved such?

Not to demean previous generations of soldiers, but when could a nation invade a foreign country with the fourth largest army on earth, topple its government in 3 weeks, then stabilize and install a democratic system in 2 years and have less than 1800 casualties?

The "good old military" never accomplished that.

Kelly:

Thank you for your service.

You implied that the current military is not the equal of previous due to the PC training they get.

I was only pointing out that this current generation of soldiers have accomplished more with fewer casualties than any previous generation of soldier was ever able to accomplish.

Basic Combat Training is for everyone. After BCT, depending on your job within the Army, you go to a weeks-long Advanced Individual Training course. Infantry goes through a different AIT than a logistics crewman, etc. Training is different for each AIT group, Combat Arms or no.

Keep in mind I'm just going off of what I've heard and read about; I don't go through BCT til March, and my "AIT" is going to be Officer Candidate School, which is going to be followed by a further weeks-long Officer Basic Course.
