Bush's "16 Words" on Iraq & Uranium: He May Have Been Wrong But He Wasn't Lying

The famous “16 words” in President Bush’s Jan. 28, 2003 State of the Union address turn out to have a basis in fact after all, according to two recently released investigations in the US and Britain.

Bush said then, “The British Government has learned that Saddam Hussein recently sought significant quantities of uranium from Africa .” Some of his critics called that a lie, but the new evidence shows Bush had reason to say what he did.

None of the new information suggests Iraq ever nailed down a deal to buy uranium, and the Senate report makes clear that  US intelligence analysts have come to doubt whether  Iraq was even trying to buy the stuff. In fact, both the White House and the CIA long ago conceded that the 16 words shouldn’t have been part of Bush’s speech.

But what he said – that Iraq sought uranium – is just what both British and US intelligence were telling him at the time. So Bush may indeed have been misinformed, but that's not the same as lying.

According to the memo, the "FBI Niger investigation" of reports that Saddam Hussein's regime had tried to buy uranium from West Africa "was done solely at the request of the vice chairman."

Clinton-era personnel reforms allowed officials of his administration to burrow into vital Pentagon posts as careerists, administration officials say, where they have been maneuvering to keep Bush loyalists out of key positions and/or undermine their authority

"reforms?" more like the workings of a person who would start his tenure by firing every U.S. Attorney in the country. I believe that the many Clinton loyalist appointees who got civil service protection by these "reforms" are responsible for many leaks and for sabotage of the current administration.

"Wilson lied from the beginning. SSCI has a memo from Wilson's wife suggesting her husband for the trip - through CIA channels."

I am not sure yet when the "beginning" began. Yes, I am aware of the SSCI memo, however, the one constant claim by Wilson has been his wife did not send him.

That may not mean much considering the numerous lies he has otherwise told, not even mentioning what he actually attempted to do by his trip to Niger.

I do agree that this has the appearance of a Hillry led agenda.

I remember the leak about Franks being under investigation weeks prior to the military action. That leak could have only come from "intel" or somebody from Congress.

The attempts to take down President Bush and save Saddam rear appear to be far more covert than Joe Wilson's woman ever was.

"---Here's the key phrase in the article!??! NOT as "Admiral" Joseph Wilson claims, he was sent to Niger on the request of Dick Cheney:... "

Joe Wilson is one stupid creature or somebody told him that this trip was at the request of the Vice President. Only somebody within "government" could have the ability to deceive another with this kind of lie.

"Never has that been proved more true than the highly partisan and perhaps treasonous memo prepared for the Democrats on the intelligence committee." - Zell Miller

Is there any way we can get Zell to run for President on the GOP line, even once?

If not, is there any way we can get him to lend us his backbone for a little while, or maybe even part of it?

I get so sick of "business as usual" in Washington!

Wilson went to Niger about uranium in 1999 & 2002...BOTH times via the CIA and at the "suggestion" of Valerie.

"The formal request for a leaks investigation would target people who described sensitive details about a new generation of spy satellites to The Washington Post, which published a page-one story about the espionage program Saturday [Dec. 11, 2004]," a Justice Department official told The Associated Press at the time.

"The fact of the matter is that [Durbin, Rockefeller and Wyden] divulged something that was above and beyond top secret and frankly, they probably blew the strategy and the hundreds of millions of dollars that were being spent to pursue it," Babbin told Crowley.

"The acknowledgement of [the "black ops" program's] existence is not even proper and the acknowledgement of them and the details of them can very well damage national security," Babbin added.

Report: Justice Department Probing Durbin, Rockefeller CIA Leak
NewsMax ^ | 7/23/05 | Carl Limbacher

Posted on 07/23/2005 10:34:08 AM PDT by wagglebee

The Justice Department has launched a criminal investigation into whether Democratic Senators Dick Durbin, Jay Rockefeller and Ron Wyden leaked details about a secret "black ops" CIA satellite program last December in a move that may have seriously compromised national security, former Deputy Undersecretary of Defense Jed Babbin said on Saturday.

"The CIA made a request to the Justice Department to investigate and possibly bring criminal charges against these three [senators]," Babbin told WABC Radio host Monica Crowley. "My information is that investigation is ongoing."

Mr. Rockefeller is the Vice Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee and Mr. Durbin is the number two ranking Democrat in the Senate.

Media reports on the satellite leak last December indicated that the Bush administration was concerned about public comments by Durbin, Rockefeller and Wyden and that the CIA had requested a Justice Department probe.

"The formal request for a leaks investigation would target people who described sensitive details about a new generation of spy satellites to The Washington Post, which published a page-one story about the espionage program Saturday [Dec. 11, 2004]," a Justice Department official told the Associated Press at the time.

But the same official told the AP that Justice "has not decided whether to investigate."

Former Deputy Undersecretary Babbin's comments on Saturday were the first indication that such a probe was actually launched and is ongoing.

"The fact of the matter is that [Durbin, Rockefeller and Wyden] divulged something that was above and beyond top secret and frankly, they probably blew the strategy and the hundreds of millions of dollars that were being spent to pursue it," he told Crowley.

"The acknowledgement of [the "black ops" program's] existence is not even proper and the acknowledgement of them and the details of them can very well damage national security," Babbin added.

Asked if he thought the three Senate Democrats should have their security clearances revoked for the duration of the leak probe, the former Defense Department official said, "Absolutely and forthwith. I mean, they should have been revoked at the time of the leak."

"There's really not much doubt about the leak having occurred," Babbin told Crowley. "It's in the press records, it's in the Congressional record. We know what they did."

"The only question," he explained, "is how much damage was done by the leak. And that's part of the criminal investigation right now - to do a damage assessment, to figure out how much this is going to cost us strategically and militarily."

If the MSM had really wanted the truth, they would have focused on this memo more.

It's clear that this is where it all started. At least from an organized DNC perspective.

Wilson had already started his own disinformation campaign as early as 1999 by then, though.

It's all coming together.

If I remember the memo correctly, it stated that they would use classified information to undermine the intelligence by picking out things that could not be publicly proved (since it was classified.)...

Dirty rats.

As I've said before, this is a reference to Rockefeller getting the FBI involved on March 14, 2003. It's not a reference to who sent Wilson to Niger. Though it's an understandable mistake.
