Perhaps they had already taken her clothes off and then "something bad happened"...Joran loses his shoe while trying to get rid of her clothes...deciding the mud wasn't deep enough to sink her too...they bury her in sand while they decide their next move.
Realizing others saw her with them, they come up with a story in case they are questioned...they point to the guards and when they are arrested...they dig her up and move her to the land fill.
