Hey, Rastus. That line struck me as odd too, but I have come to understand it. Yes, it is a repudiation of God, but I understand the sentiment, I've been there. I think every person of faith struggles and has moments or ordeals when we feel like God has let us down, or we're angry at God for some reason. You know, "My God, My God why have you forsaken me?"

The beauty of the song acknowledges those feelings of struggle, but then brings you back to him standing on the hill of the Son. Grace prevails in the end despite OUR weakness and fear.

Does that help?

It does. It seemed a little too present tense for me, but it could be seen as the narrator seeing what was "in the cold mirror of a glass" from the previous verse, and the verses after it were him conquering that past.

By the way, Rattle & Hum wasn't my favorite album, but there were some great songs on there. Particularly Heartland. As for Bono, I don't agree with him a lot, but I do respect that he is willing to meet the opposition halfway. Most on the Left would never say they respect George Bush, but Bono is not afraid to do so. He asks someone to do something, and actually shows some appreciate when it happens. Others on that side usually find a way to twist it to a negative even when they get their way. Example: the outreach Bush gave to Ted Kennedy, only to be slapped down.
