WASHINGTON -- Mulling legislation to shield the gun industry from some lawsuits, the Senate on Thursday approved a provision requiring a separate child safety lock with each handgun purchase.
Added to the bill 70-30, the language proposed by Sen. Herb Kohl, D-Wis., is the first that majority Republicans have allowed to come to the floor. Senate Republican Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., said he might allow others.
The Kohl amendment would require any licensed manufacturer, importer or dealer to include a separate child safety or locking device with each handgun purchase, except those purchased by government officials and police officers. Any violation could be punished by the suspension of a dealer's license, a $10,000 fine or both.
The overall bill, sponsored by Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, would protect the gun industry from lawsuits filed for criminal or unlawful use of firearms or ammunition.
Senate leaders opened debate earlier this week with a tough stance against amendments that might offend the National Rifle Association and kill the bill.

Which will get tossed in the drawer!
Smith and Wesson has been doing this for years.
Living in CT, when I went to get my state CCW permit last year they gave me a pile of gun locks. There's a box of them at the counter.
Especially since virtually all manufacturers do this already.
Especially since virtually all manufacturers do this already.
They just try to nickel and dime the 2nd Amendment away.
Here we go again. Stupid Rat libs watering down important legislation with anti-gun amendments to please the Brady bunch.
As long as there is no mandate to use the thing.
Government officials and police don't have children?
If it's good enough for everyone else, it ought to be good enough for the gummint.
House won't pass this.
Exactly. Like I said, this is the beginning of the watering down by the Rats. This is how they killed the last gun bill that protected the industry from frivolous lawsuits.
I agree, this isn't a horrible amendment, as most manufacturers already do it. Additionally, it only applies to handguns. I'm watching this one VERY closely.
Has anyone ever shot a gun lock with a slingshot? I'll bet it could do some real damage.
Dad Gummint!
Because, you'll just feeeeeeeeeeeel safer.
That's O.K. I need a good sinker when I go fishing.
To me this kind of legislation is why these folks need to be parttime.
They use Columbine as the go to reason, never of course talking about the prescribed drugs these guys were on.
Ditto!
Nor, the more than 15 guns laws broken.
But, 1 MORE LAW would have prevented it
