Long but interesting read on Book 7 theories, Kopel presents his own analysis on the role of Severus, and links to other researchers in all things Potter.....caution spoiler.

Before I read the article, let me post my speculation. Snape made the same unbreakable vow with Dumbledore -- that he would protect Harry Potter, assist him in defeating Voldemort, and in the event that Harry appears to have failed, kill Voldemort himself.
In the interest of fulfilling this mission, he decides he must kill Dumbledore to divert attention from Harry, who is defenseless in the same room with an armada of death eaters.
Snape is not evil, but he is one cold customer. He can say anything or do anything without hesitation or regret. The perfect general for marching troops into the machine guns as a diversion.
Snape will die in book seven, perhaps vindicated, perhaps not, but his presence will assist Harry.

Seriously guys, what the hell is this doing here? I was going to ask the same thing but never realized there was a book two. Do you know if there is really a 2 through 7? Regardless there must be some forum at harrypotter.com to discuss the subtleties of this witch craft drivel.

OK, I've read it. That guy has devoted some serious research to a kid's book.

I think that this guy is off base and creating a great deal out of whole cloth. Somehow, Snape is a sympathetic figure no matter how horrible he treated Harry, how he ratted on his enemies to Voldemort, or now how he murders Dumbledore.
We want to like Snape, and like Dumbledore seem ready to forgive him no matter what he does. Snape is evil, despite our great desire to forgive him. This guy devotes a huge amount of time and energy to wanting to forgive Snape.
Looks like Snape fooled one more.

I agree with you partialy. I think Dumbledore actually requested Snape to kill him for reasons yet unknown. I think Snape was never a death eater and was always a spy for Dumbledore and that is why D trusted him. We will find out in the last book, number 7.

I dunno.....
I read it last night, and all throughout the books, Snape is aware (a la 6th sense) that Harry's under the invisibility cloak) but can't seem to know it for certain.
I'm more of the opinion that, with Harry having witnessed Dumbledore's demise, he will let his emotions override his raging fury, and kill him before a "reason" can be justified.
Alas, I know that D knew was going to perish that night (his own prophecy) and kept Harry hidden so to give the good guys a fighting chance.

Harry'd better wise up and start earnestly studying/learning some useful magic to help him in the current struggle with Voldemort. He should spend a few weeks working for Fred and George.

Think about "who" it is that has written this article....Dave Kopel...who also writes for National Review, quite amusing. I don't agree this is necessarily a "kids book".
I do think Dumbledore and Snape made a pact to not allow any "child" to become corrupted, and thus Snape has to kill Dumbledore. I can't quite buy the Harry must die, so Voldemort dies in book 7 scenario...it's even too cynical for me.
