Syria, Iraq Link May Have Fueled Insurgency (Syria partners with Saddam's regime, Oil for Food)
Fox News ^ | 7-27-05

WASHINGTON — Congressional lawmakers on Wednesday laid out a detailed and disturbing picture of alleged Syrian complicity with Saddam Hussein's Iraq.

And because of that complicity, money funneled into Iraq may have gone to help fuel the insurgency currently targeting U.S. and coalition troops, as well as Iraqi civilians, said members of the House International Relations Joint Oversight Subcommittee.

Syria had a more than $3 billion role in funneling money and weapons to Saddam Hussein during the period of the scandal-plagued U.N. Oil-for-Food (search) program, according to documents obtained by the congressional panel.

The Syrian government, led by President Bashir Assad, isn't saying what it has done with that cash. But Congress fears it may now be in the hands of terrorists not just in Iraq but around the world.

"We see the bloody consquences of the arming of Iraq even going on today," Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif., said Wednesday during a subcommittee hearing. "I wouldn't think that it would be irrational for us to conclude, madame chairman, that those funds are being filtered to those people who are financing this bloody insurgency that is going on in Iraq today."

Victor Comras, former member of the U.N. Al Qaeda monitoring group, responded by saying: "That's a fair assumption that at least part of these funds are being made available to support this insurgency and perhaps other terrorist activities."

But those accusations haven't gone over well with Syrian officials.

"They need a scapegoat and they like to blame Syria for their own failed policies in Iraq," Syrian Ambassador Imad Moustapha told reporters after the hearing.

The documents in question, prepared by IRS special agents, have emerged as a new avenue in Congress' investigation into Oil-for-Food.

Syria has had its hand where it doesn't belong for decades now. This is not surprising. Using Lebanon as a base of attack against Israel. Moving WMDs for Saddam. And sending insurgents into Iraq. Can we put Damascus on our things to do list?

Have you seen these photos of the mig jets the military uncovered in Iraq?

here

Like they couldn't have buried a couple gallons of sarin gas somewhere, or shipped them to Syria. Duh.

It's going to take years before they uncover everything. I was talking to some troops who returned home after this and those jets were found by accident.

My daughter is NBC, they are kind of bored with their mos currently. Jokingly, they're called nobody cares. Except when there's an issue. Someday, the cache's will be found. It won't be pretty either.

No, it will not. We messed up during the first gulf war with a weapons cache and I hope we don't do the same thing this time.

it's amazing that a country so strong and advanced as the US feels a need to stir up conflicts with third world country's.First attack a country based on false information. You said you knew they had it and where it was.Even though the weapons inspectors said there was no proof of any such weapons.I know and then turn around and say that they were harbouring terrorist.Yet Iraq was never ever listed on the list of nation who sponsered terrorists.then tell everyone that you are really there to liberate the people of Iraq. But when the military of Iraq comes to work the next day tell them to go home we dont need you anymore. Finally Americans notice a steady increase in violence in Iraq agaist the occupying force after a few months and I know its an insugents and Saddam loyalists.Ok then Saddam is captured and know its the AQ and Syria. Not the million strong unemployed former army.America then desides to rebuild the iraqi army they will pay them a whooping $200 per month for such duties. However Outsiders can come to there country and be paid $500 per day driving a truck,$350 a day for a cook.Lets face it the American economy is based on war look at history. What is defence budget $500,000,000,000+ a year more then every other country on earth combined.Look i am not anti american i just disagree with the foriegn policies and believe you should use this great might for good and not for economic gains. There are at least 4 other counties around the world that would love to see some type of intervension.

The cache will only be found by a RAT administration. And it will be with Syrian and Insurgent cooperation. This would be designed to keep the RATS in power and the RATS could then use their PR and say Bush couldn't do it but we did.

Bush knows where the WMD are buried. So do the Israelis. And the Syrians know we know. Which probably explained Syrias pullout from Lebanon.

It is easier to say no WMD were found then to have the RATS ask "do we know that there isn't more of it somewhere?" I would be more afraid not knowing if there was more then knowing there isn't any. And you know the NY Slimes will paste this on the front pages for months.

I hope they know. After talking to so many troops returning home I have a gut feeling everything may have not made it out to Syria. I don't think we will mess up but I fear that some idiot will use them unaware of what the heck he has. There are a ton of munitions over there and a bunch of places to hide them.</p>
