‘Millennium bomber’ sentenced to 22 years

SEATTLE - The man convicted of plotting to blow up the Los Angeles airport on the eve of the millennium was sentenced Wednesday to 22 years in prison.

Ahmed Ressam got a lighter sentence than prosecutors had requested, reflecting his cooperation in telling international investigators about the workings of terror camps in Afghanistan.

In sentencing Ressam, U.S. District Judge John C. Coughenour said he hoped to balance U.S. resolve to punish potential terrorist acts with Ressam’s cooperation. Coughenour also said he hoped to send a message that the U.S. court system works in terrorism cases.

“We did not need to use a secret military tribunal, detain the defendant indefinitely or deny the defendant the right to counsel. ... Our courts have not abandoned the commitment to the ideals that set this nation apart,” he said.

The lefty judge is giving him 5 years served, and he has the possibility of three years reduced for good behavior.

This guy will live to kill another day.

His lawyer said that when he gets out of jail he will be deported. So it probably doesn't matter, as jail probably offers more freedom and a better life than whatever s***hole he comes from.

Meanwhile back in London, they just captured the Somali terrorist who attempted to blow up one of London's subways. He is an ex-con, convicted of gang-related violent crimes on London's streets. Like the creep in this story he got a light sentence by the liberal Court, and was released from prison early, (so he could terrorize England).

Has the appropriate prison population been told that they have a new dance partner coming in?

Why is this guy even given a date...should have been life w/o possibility of parole...

How can we get serious about terrorism, if our courts go easy on them like this!

If he survives. In jail they don't like child molestors. I wonder if some criminal might not be interested in a presidential pardon.

Typical prosecutor's problem. They could have given him a tougher sentance, only then they may not get any info from him, and who knows who would have died if that had happened.

What a lousy message this "judge" just gave to we the people. In effect, he says:
1)too bad that this terrorist would have murdered thousands of you if he had succeeded in his plans
2)too bad that he stopped cooperating with the prosecuter & two of his fellow terrorists will likely be set free
3) too bad that you spent so much time, trouble & money trying to protect yourselves from the likes of this terrorist
4) too bad if you thought I would pass up this opportunity to slam military tribunals...you see, I have a POLITICAL point to make here

Unbelievable & disgusting.
