'Pulsa denura' tape sparks TV dogfight
Jerusalem Post ^ | July 27, 2005

Posted on 07/27/2005 7:52:49 AM PDT by Alouette

Channel 10 Executive Producer Avi Barzilai on Wednesday repulsed the idea of broadcasting a tape of the Pulsa Denura ceremony against Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, calling the rite "a despicable ceremony by despicable people bought and broadcast by individuals who pretend to be journalists and would do anything in order to raise their ratings."

"As a senior journalist," he told Army Radio, "I don't regard them as members of the profession," Barzilai continued.

Israel Segal - chief editor of Channel 2's current affairs program Mishal Ham that acquired the tape for $5,000 - claimed that the moment the tape became available, nearly all major media outlets began a race to be the first to broadcast it.

According to Segal, Channel 10 contacted him in an effort to fix a price for the tape. "To hear from the respected head of Channel 10 news that 'he would never touch the tape' is ludicrous," Segal scoffed.

Segal insisted that the media outlets that "lost" were "whining", throwing out terms like "incitement to violence" because Channel 2 beat them to the punch.

Meanwhile, Peace Now appealed to the Second Authority for Television and Radio to stop the planned Wednesday evening broadcast of the videotape. The Channel 2 News company broadcast an excerpt of the tape on Tuesday evening.

Peace Now Spokesman Yariv Oppenheimer declared:"Mishal Ham's willingness to pay for the tape makes it an accessory to a crime, and a major inciter of violence."

Chief Rabbi Yona Metzger decried the ceremony, saying that such activities cheapen religious and moral values.

Beit-El Rabbi Shlomo Aviner, considered one of the senior rabbis of the right, said Wednesday morning in Army Radio interview that the ceremony was an extremist act by a group of extremists whose only significance was in the ensuing media attention.

"Don't give people ideas. The media has no small part in this agitation," Rabbi Aviner said and added, "But keeping a person from praying we haven't yet gotten to this."

Peace Now said in response that, "The entire right has to do some urgent soul-searching before the next political murder occurs."

I'm not familiar with the term pulsa denura. At first glance it appears to be Latin but I suppose it is Aramaic?

Is this some sort of cheirem?

Excuse me?

I'd suggest that the entire Peace Now crowd do some serious soul-searching. Jews are still dying in terror attacks...rockets and mortars are raining down in Gaza...Abbas has no intention of putting a stop to the attacks. The PA has reneged on their agreement to disarm the jihadists in the PA...and Peace Now has the unmitigated chutzpah to suggest that the right should do the soul-searching?

This bunch of lunatics think that appeasing Arabs will result in peace in the ME?

Good Lord above, they have to grow some pretty potent weed in the Holy Land.

While far-right activists may have instigated a pulsa denura (death curse) against Ariel Sharon, Dr. Dov Schwartz – a researcher at Bar-Ilan University's Talmud faculty – claims the prime minister can sleep soundly, assured that nothing will happen to him. Shwartz, 45, from the settlement of Psagot, is currently working on a research paper on the origins of the pulsa denura curse. According to him, it is a recent evolution of the more widely-known act of herem – the excommunication from the Jewish community of a person believed to be a criminal.

"It [pulsa denura] is not serious," Schwartz told The Jerusalem Post Tuesday. "Sharon has nothing to worry about, except that someone may decide to use this ceremony as legitimacy to act against him."

Schwartz said that through research he discovered that, until 50 years, ago there was no prayer or curse called a pulsa denura.

In the beginning of the 20th century, he said, the haredi community in Jerusalem was constantly excommunicating different "sinners" and the first-known pulsa denura only occurred in 1958, after a person mysteriously died following an excommunication prayer.

"In the 1940s, the haredim cursed someone and blew the shofar outside his house to excommunicate him – and within six hours someone connected to the affair died," Schwartz said. "Since that event they began to think they had created a new curse. It all started as a way to threaten someone from the community who didn't pay a debt," he said.

"And today it has mysteriously developed into a curse against our prime ministers."

I'm not familiar with this either, but his is an interesting link.

This is some sort of ancient hex ceremony that a rabbi can put on someone, and apparently was done prior to Itzak Rabin prior to his assassination. I thought we in the USA had to deal with subversives like Michael Moore, Israel apparently has it ten times worth, with more disloyals than we have.

Do the death cursers think that the next prime minister will be any better than Sharon?

I guess they figure if it actually happens, then God wanted it to be so. As a Christian I would call that being in league with the Devil.

They must be really stupid because if Sharon croaks, the next PM will be Shimon Peres.

calling the rite "a despicable ceremony by despicable people

The ceremony is thousands of years old, rooted in ancient tradition. this scumbag journalist would probably think nothing of airing 4th grade girls learning to put condoms on cucumbers. But THIS he finds "despicable".

Pulsa D´nura

Rabbi Chaim Tabasky

Question:

I would like to know what Pulsa D´nura is. I read in a newspaper that Ariel Sharon was threatened by a Rabbi with a ceremony called Pulsa D´nura.

Answer:

A Pulsa D'nura (literally, lashes of fire) is a strong Rabbinic curse, essentially a declaration of the death penalty. To the best of my knowledge, no serious Rabbinic authority has suggested actual implementation of such a curse on Mr Sharon."

Just to answer some of the posts here, the Rabbis that invoked the pulsa d'nura are no more representative of observant Jews than the Rev Fred Phelps is representative of Christians here in the US.

They'll then curse him in turn. Maybe they're cursing him now, to get ahead of the game.

It definitely sounds like an Israeli thang. Can you imagine the furor in America if, say, someone like "God Hates America" Fred Phelp's "Baptist" church sent ABC, CBS, and NBC a tape of his folks praying for President Bush to die?

"I thought we in the USA had to deal with subversives like Michael Moore, Israel apparently has it ten times worth, with more disloyals than we have."

Exactly, except in Israel, they get elected to Prime Minister.

Oh, that isn't what you meant...? Too bad, it's what's accurate.

Well if they are really earnestly praying for God to yank Sharon and install Peres, can they complain if God grants their prayer?

I'm afraid I'm like a lot of Americans who are ignorant about what is fact and what is fiction in Israel. Although, I would tend to think that appeasing your enemy is not smart.
