BAGHDAD - Framers of Iraq's constitution will designate Islam as the main source of legislation - a departure from the model set down by U.S. authorities during the occupation - according to a draft published yesterday.

The draft states no law will be approved that contradicts "the rules of Islam" - a requirement that could affect women's rights and set Iraq on a course far different from the one envisioned when U.S.-led forces invaded in 2003 to topple Saddam Hussein.

"Islam is the official religion of the state and is the main source of legislation," reads the draft published in the government newspaper Al-Sabah. "No law that contradicts with its rules can be promulgated."

The document also grants the Shiite religious leadership in the holy city of Najaf a "guiding role" in recognition of its "high national and religious symbolism."

I agree completely. This is ONE of MANY drafts, how come THIS one made the news? Simply because it sells newspapers, because it's obviously controversial. I would wait to see the FINAL Charter before reacting.

You are welcome to your opinion but all ex-muslims disagree with you..

Well, proves my point..in a way.

EX-muslimes disagree..hard core muslimes, even women, would not.

Check out those links and read what the ex-muslims say. This isn't a contest to prove who is right. That would be pure vanity...not my goal.

In this case, the truth actually matters...unless your goal is vanity.

This ayatollahzation of Iraq" is BAD NEWS for Christians, Sunni Arabs, and Kurds in Iraq, as well as for Americans, Brits, and most of the rest of the world. It is GOOD NEWS for the ayatollahs and mullahs of Iran (the most dangerous country in the world), who will at least get an ally, if not a puppet!

It would be a DISASTER if all that our troops have been fighting for is to create an even worse enemy than Saddam!!!! Can America do anything about it?

Vietnamization: We'll teach the South Vietnamese who have no history of democracy how to run their own government and how to defend themselves. On April 30th we witnessed the "triumph" of Vietnamization. A quick summary can be found here: http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/VNvietnamization.htm Iraquization: We have the 2006 midterm elections coming up with Hillary looming on the 2008 horizon. The 2 term president does the politically expedient thing to preserve his party's popularity by being able to claim he got us out of Iraq.

My point is these things take T-I-M-E ! ! ! perhaps an entire generation
