Couple of WILD and CRAZY GUYS!
1789, Baby.
Welcome :-)
It's America's premier race meeting, about 150 miles north of New York City. And if you go, be sure to go to Siro's (a bar) after the races. Racing begins today and continues for six weeks, every day except Tuesday.

Ahhh.... McSorley's.
I was there the day that they were forced to allow women in. Even the female owner had not set foot into the bar before that. I was sitting near the cast iron stove with friends, when a young Cooper Union co-ed rushed for the bathroom. One of the bartenders shouted at her to wait and then rushed to the door, but too late to stop her. He stood post with his arms across his chest, glaring sternly while blushing all the while. The guffaws from the crowd caused him to turn as a red-faced and bewildered young man walked out of said bathroom.
Mangy cats, greasy dust clotted turkey wishbones hanging above the bar, peanut shells on the floor. And the only place in NYC that I know of that served Liederkranz cheese. With raw onions. And chili. That's atmosphere. They don't have room for places like that anymore.
1970. It took a Supreme Court decision to do it. They stood their ground. Used to be the only place a feller could get away from the family for a bit, before sleep, and the whistle blowing the next morning. The fun part came when they locked the doors at closing time, locking everybody in.
Ah...the stove.
