U.S. and Iraqi forces have killed or arrested more than 50,000 Iraqi insurgents in the past seven months, a former top general who has headed repeated Pentagon assessment missions to Iraq said yesterday. Gen. Jack Keane, a former deputy chief of staff for the Army, also said the United States has a good picture of the leadership of the vicious insurgency but less of an idea about its mid- and lower-level ranks.
"We know who they are," he told a lunch gathering sponsored by the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. He said the eight to 10 leaders "occasionally meet -- we've recorded that -- not just in Iraq, but in Jordan and Syria." Gen. Keane's remarks provided a rare insight into the extent of U.S.-led operations against an insurgency that has been responsible for hundreds of deaths in the past few weeks alone.
Pentagon officials previously had been quoted as saying 15,000 to 16,000 Iraqis were in custody in Iraq, but spokesman Lawrence DiRita was unable to comment last night on the 50,000 figure offered by the general. "I would highly doubt that anyone has a good handle on the numbers," he said. "I'm not aware of what General Keane has been told, but I know of no number that has been provided to the secretary, briefed by the commanders, or is being tracked by anyone."
Gen. Keane, noting that the numbers probably were higher now, said, "In the past six to seven months, we have killed or captured 50,000 insurgents."

"I do so hope you are correct, and would be interesting "if" the Iraqis determine that some of our liberals politicians are responsible for the recruitment of insurgents the world over."
The Iraqis would have a great data base to start their investigations right here on Free Republic.
That is a great idea, FR to establish justice.
Which is just another reason for us where it is legally to post entire articles, op eds and emails from the dark side.
Then that data will be there in the future if sane people start to connect the dots.
BTW, I see that Traitor Jane is embarking on a bus tour. It would be great if her bus would be greeted with a barrage of rotten eggs and tomatoes in every town she visited.
???? Sure about the figures?
"I would love to see Doofus Durbin, Ted the Drunk, Traitor John, Traitor Jane and other US leftists standing in chains before the war crimes tribunal in Baghdad. What a glorious fantasy!

So long as we send them via "Gitmo" for a couple of years.
We do get a glimpse of what Jane's religion is based upon.
Iraq is NOT a quagmire BUMP!!!!
Why just the people in mullahTurbanDurbin's state. The words "United States SINator" appear before his name. He may be elected in Illinois, but when he speaks from the Senate floor, he represents ALL Americans.
Send him this article, send him the stories about the sudden rise of violence in Afghanistan immediately following his remarks that claimed 16 of our Navy Seals. Write across them that he, mullahTurban, has BLOOD ON HIS HANDS and he must resign!
Of course, he could care less, but at least we can try to do something rather than sit here and call him names. (not that I don't enjoy it)
You are right.
However, only Illinois people can vote him out of office.
If he gets swapped by mailings from them, he might wake up a little.

Israel set this precedent when it hunted down Nazi War Criminals and those who supported the Nazis in their war crimes. In a couple of years the Iraqis will have a lot oil money to enable these tribunals.
If he was flooded with this type of mail, then some one, some where, would have to take notice.
If the pubs in the Senate had any b....guts, this pow (piece of work) would have been censured, forced to step down from his "leadership" role then forced to resign or be expelled.
The problem is that with the exception of Joe Lieberman and possibly some Democrat Senators from Red States facing reelection in 2006, the party agrees with what Durbin did
I am sure it is down a bit since the peak, which was 1995, when uniform crime statistics and estimates for Los Angeles County alone had approximately 150,000 gang members active in some 1,500 different gangs throughout the County. Los Angeles county has gangs in about 38 municipalities.
Here is an excerpt from an e-mail I received from Senator Allen in response to my plea for him/them/the majority to do something regarding mullahTurban:
I believe Senator Durbin has begun to see the error of his previous comments by attempting to apologize for his absurd, deplorable analogy.
Now if that is not a waste of my time, energy, tax dollars and peace of mind, I don't know what is.
LSM headline "Over 50,000 civilians killed or arrested in Iraq by US"
I'm so surprised....NOT!
