No. The little boy needs discipline. If the mother is not up to the job, the father has to step in and do the job. Letting the little boy run wild is doing him a very great disservice. No matter how smart the guy is, he is not intelligent enough to set the tone in his own family. Sad, really.

What did you expect him to do, pick him up by the ears? I agree the boy needs discipline but I'm not sure that was the place to make a scene.

My 8 year old son is very well-mannered and knows how to behave himself, in public, and at home.
At age 4, however, he was not mature enough to muster the skills necessary to be on his best behavior at all times. Also, you might want to take into account that the boy was probably exhausted by this point in the day. The more tired a child is, it seems the wilder they become. Why that is, I don't know. (:
I think you're assuming a lot about their family dynamics from one instance of an overly tired little boy just being, well, a little boy!
