You can't justify it and probably shouldn't, it is a horrible twist of fate, plain and simple. No good guys, no bad guys just a horrible situation with a tragic result. They did not do the right thing (cops) they did not do the wrong thing they did a rash thing in the midst of a war, and shit happens. V's wife.

If the man had been wearing a bomb vest and the cops had held their shots, he could have murdered hundreds. At which point the howls of outrage would be enormous. The chief of police would be fired, etc.. The cops did what they had to do.

I disagree. They did the right thing. The were trying to apprehend a person they though very well might be carrying a bomb with the intent to blow up innocent people.

If I understand the facts correctly, he fled the police rather than surrender when confronted.

They couldn't let him get away if they though he was going to blow people up.

If they weren't able to apprehend him without a struggle and they though he was carrying a bomb, they had to kill him before he could set off the bomb and kill everyone around.

Police are not psychics. They can only make decisions based on the information available, and it seems like based on that information that they made the right decision.

Is it justice that a man was killed for fleeing and struggling with the police? No. However, if you want a just result, you need to give the police a chance to make informed decisions. Fleeing and struggling rather than complying does not give them that chance, and they have to make decisions on which people's lives are dependent based on limited knowledge.

This is why you don't have the right to disobey the lawful orders of police officers here in the US. The police may be making a mistake in arresting you, but that can be worked out with the help of a lawyer. It's better to need a lawyer than a coroner.
