UN: JORDANIAN PRINCE EYES TOP UN JOB, SAY SOURCES

Amman, 25 July (AKI) - Jordan's crown prince, Hasan bin Talal, the uncle of the country's monarch, King Abdullah, is considering putting his name forward as a candidate to succeed Kofi Annan as UN secretary-general, according to Jordanian sources. The candidature of the Bin Talal, 58, is based on his "efforts to combat terrorism and extremism in the Arab world," the sources said.

However, the prince's chances of succeeding Annan, whose mandate ends in December 2006, are considered slim in Jordan, given that the current international political climate would make it difficult for an Arab to occupy the UN's top job.

Other names being touted as possible candidates, include former US president Bill Clinton and Thailand's deputy premier Surakiat Sathianthai.

Egyptian Boutros Boutros Ghali, who was elected in 1992, is the only Arab to have held the secretary general position.

Hasan bin Talal should watch his back otherwise he could end up like Vince Foster.

I'd rather have a Muslim than Bill Clinton. Clinton, IMO, would more forcefully set about to destroy the sovereignty of the United States so he could be in charge again.

Besides, put a Muslim in charge and maybe there would be enough backlash that the US would finally abandon the United Nations.

Let's see, they've had Waldheim, and Annan, seems a choice in line with their prior picks.

You mean his sister-in-law. Queen Noor is the late king's wife and stepmother to the current king

Just what the UN needs. Another priveliged despot who feels that he has some divine right to lord it over others.

He couldn't be any worse than Kofi. If he'd offer to pick up a big chunk of that useless behemoth's tab, I could support his candidacy.
