something is wrong with this story
Well, I haven't heard Savage since our local radio station switched to the Tony Snow show. That was about six months or so ago.
Who is talking about Rush?
Thought comparison should be based upon same hours of broadcast.
Ok, so its possible we are both right about him. Thanks for the exchange, and sorry for my barb earlier about the mole IQ ;)

KOAM
i hear ya!
that was a great call....
Yup.
The "savage" Joe Pyne was syndicated on 450 radio stations by the end of the 1960s. I knew of Pyne by his TV show. I never heard Pyne on radio. Radio was my favorite and Cincinnati had a couple of great ones in the 1950s and 60s though nothing like Pyne and modern talk radio.
It appears that Pynes KLAC (L.A.) morning show was replaced by Bob Grant in 1969 when Pyne's contract was not renewed. Pyne's syndicated radio show was taped reruns until all stations disappeared.
Stange, IMO. His show outdrew Dodger baseball. He was on 450 stations. His TV show was on more than 80 stations.
Though it may have been known that he had a terminal illness by that time (he died in 1970, I believe) you'd think that he would have had imitators just as some believe Rush's success spawned "imitators." Almost 450 opportunities were out there.
Here's the point.
People just weren't interested in controversial talk? Is that what they recall?
Well here's what communications expert Dr. Thomas W. Hazlett has to say:
"You might also think that they would recall the notorious Fairness Doctrine, which was used to 'harass and intimidate' right-wing radio broadcasts, in the words of one unabashed Kennedy-Johnson operative. When that censorious policy was ended in 1987 by former broadcaster Ronald Reagan, there was an explosion of talk formats"
Few station owners dared take the risk.
Did the "Fairness Doctrine" forbid controversial political opinon? No. But if a station received complaints the owner could lose his license.
All this wild talk about lunatics and nut cases, deranged ranting just helps the enemies of conservative talk build a case for another "Fairness Doctrine." Ostensibly aimed at Michael Savage you know damn well their target will be all conservatives.
If the Star of the Fleet is going to be Howard Stern then I don't believe in the product. They paid too much for that turkey.
You're not thinking clearly, nikos. Howard has already given them enough publicity to more than double subscriptions. They'll double again as we get closer to January, when he's slated to start on Sirius. That will put them over 4 million subs, well over. Starting out at under 1 million, that's a great increase. 3 mill times $12.95 per month? That's 38.85 million just in subscriber rates. Times 12 is 466.2 million. If they're "only" paying him 100 million a year, how is this a bad deal for Sirius? That doesn't include the advertising revenue they pull from his show, because there will be commercials. He has made more than a billion in ad revenues for Infinity over the last five years, so lets throw that in. 3.331 billion return on 500 million investment. Again, how is this bad for Sirius? By the way, this is based on a static number of subs. That number will undoubtedly climb. They'll return 10 times on original investment over five years. Pretty good if you ask me.
He's a lying POS scumbag. I bet he won't mention THIS on his show.
Exactly!
Does anyone know if Michael Weiner responded to this?
Check out the "Great One", Mark Levin is FANTASTIC. He's also a fellow FReeper.
I remember that. Now for the rest of the story. Talk radio is about business, egos, and competition.
His point was that both Rush's and Hannity's numbers had dropped. His numbers had increased. Thus in that context he "beat" both.
Yes he did accuse Drudge of "spiking" that aspect of the story.
Why do I care?
Because I remember how hard it was to find opinions to counter the Rockefeller Republicans and liberals of the three networks, the newspapers, and the weekly news magazines - for the average Bill six-pack (or two).
Especially irritating was getting access to stories that were spiked by the MSM. My letters of complaint to the networks got nothing but dismissals because "we're professional journalists and you're not."
Were I and my friends alone? No, if I judge by the early days of modern talk radio. I cannot count the number of times callers told the host, "I didn't know other people believed as I believe!" "I didn't know that anyone else knew that!" "You're saying what I been thinking for years!"
Then a few years ago I heard a long interview with Dr. Hazlett when he was still at U.C. Davis. I found out why the likes of Larry King and liberal puff radio existed -- Larry King to caller, "You're against the tax increase? Don't you love your Country?" -- but not the Joe Pynes of America and damn few local conservative talkers.
I don't want to see the hatred of Savage lead back to those dark days. Let him sink on his own if it is to be. We don't need encouragement for laws targeting a "lunatic." IMO.
BTW: Mr. Mark Levin is a favorite guest on KSFO's Lee Rodgers and Melanie Morgan show. I certainly would listen to his show, a good time would be to replace the O'Reilly show on Sacramento's AM 650 -- though I'd miss John Gibson's fill in. Yes it would be a delayed broadcast in that case.
Good...Franken is less of an embarrassment for the liberals than Savage is for us.
I hope he KILLS him in the ratings to the point that he's taken off the air.
Savage is our Michael Moore.
Yes, but they're relying on someone who quite frankly doesn' shock anyone anymore. You don't put your eggs in one basket.
I got my money out of it, I feel fine. If the price goes down, I might jump back in.
CAn't someone complain of anti trust? Local radio sucks. Absolutely. But if I'm in California and I wish to listen to WLS in Chicago, how will I? I can't imagine than ABC is going to sit back and let someone else take over the Satellite Radio market.
