That Larry Johnson you mentioned wrote a letter in the NYT in July 2001 that people were being scared unnecessarily about terrorism and that the next big threat was really from a nuclear attack.
Not two months later, 9/11 happened and we were shown why Larry is an ex-CIA agent.
thanks
That's right.
Here are some other tidbits about Larry (maybe we should say "There's Something About Larry"). I did a search on msn and here are some of the things that came up (you may need to take a shower after visiting some of these sites. 2 things I learned that I didn't know (or forgot)
1) he was a classmate of Val's at the CIA
2) he was at the State Dept after being in the CIA.
I've included a link to his company site and an article he wrote about terrorism in 1998 at the bottom of this post and 1 to the PBS News Hour in 2003, where he was part of a round-table discussion when the investigation was 1st announced (next to last below). The sites he's posted on are all leftists (one might say wacko) sites. He's also a guest on some of these shows and there are claims that he's a registered Republican or gave $s to the Bush campaign (maybe Bush 1?). If I weren't the suspicious type when it comes to Dims, I might say that he's just a friend sticking up for a friend (Plame)and his old employer (CIA). However, I have a strange feeling that it's something more than that - just can't put my finger on it yet (except that maybe he's trying to hide something, too?). It seems he's coming out a lot and quite strongly all of a sudden and primarily on left-wing sites (is he trying to stir something up?) Me thinks he doest protest too much.

Article: The Big Lie About Valerie Plame - Larry Johnson (July 13, 2005): Interesting tidbit - Lar and Val were classmates at the CIA together - don't recall hearing this before. Other than that he just talks about how Bush, Toesning, etc. are lying and poor Joe, Val, etc. and "Here are the facts. Bush's lies have resulted in the deaths of almost 1800 American soldiers and the mutilation of 12,000. Joe Wilson has not killed anyone. He tried to prevent the needless death of Americans and the loss of American prestige in the world."

Sorry, but I can't bring myself to go into michaelmoore.com
Here's the blurb from the search though. Interesting, Larry claims to be a registered Republican - he's also apparently been/will be on

Code Rove
A Treasonous Act
This is not a partisan issue. Back in October of 2003, shortly after Robert Novak -- over CIA protests -- published Plame's identity, a group of former CIA agents testified before a Senate Democratic Policy Committee on the outing of their colleague. The agents, Larry Johnson, Michael Grimaldi and Brent Cavan, all of whom are Republicans, pulled no punches in their shared statement:
We also want to send a clear message to the political operatives responsible for outing Mrs. Wilson. Such action was treacherous, if not treasonous. ... Such action has allowed the less attractive aspects of politics to supersede the Government's responsibility to protect the citizens of this nation and the individuals who serve in difficult, dangerous covert capacities. This has set a sickening precedent. The senior Administration officials who did this have warned all U.S. intelligence officers and the intelligence community that any one individual may be compromised if providing information or factual analysis the White House does not like.
If left unpunished, this cowardly act [blowing Plame's cover] will not only hinder our efforts to recruit qualified individuals into the clandestine service, but it will have a far-reaching, deleterious effect on our ability to recruit foreign intelligence assets overseas. Who in their right mind would ever agree to become a spy for the United States when we cannot even protect our own undercover officers?

IN THE SHADOWS (PBS News Hour Show)
September 30, 2003
The Justice Department announced Tuesday that it would launch an investigation into who disclosed the identity of a covert CIA agent, a leak the Washington Post reported occurred when unidentified White House officials called at least six journalists with the information. Terence Smith gets two expert views on what journalists' obligations are to both their sources and the public.
[Note: Larry Johnson was included in this roundtable discussion - he mentioned here that he went to school w Plame and that he donated $ to G. Bush's campaign)

Larry is a partner at Berg Associates, LLC
Here's a little of his bio:
Larry C. Johnson is CEO and co-founder of BERG Associates, LLC, an international business-consulting firm that helps multinational corporations and financial institutions identify strategic opportunities, manage risks, and counter threats posed by terrorism and money laundering.
From 1989 until October 1993, Larry Johnson served as a Deputy Director in the U.S. State Departments Office of Counter Terrorism. He managed crisis response operations for terrorist incidents throughout the world and he helped organize and direct the US Governments debriefing of US citizens held in Kuwait and Iraq, which provided vital intelligence on Iraqi operations following the 1990 invasion of Kuwait. Mr. Johnson also participated in the investigation of the terrorist bombing of Pan Am 103. Under Mr. Johnsons leadership the U.S. airlines and pilots agreed to match the US Governments two million-dollar reward.
From 1985 through September 1989 Mr. Johnson worked for the Central Intelligence Agency. During his distinguished career, he received training in paramilitary operations, worked in the Directorate of Operations, served in the CIAs Operations Center, and established himself as a prolific analyst in the Directorate of Intelligence.
He has a publication on the same site (it appears to have been written in 1998:
Is Terrorism Getting Worse? by Larry C. Johnson

Here's the last part of that article:
CHART 7
This data tells us where we have been, but does not tell us where we are going. Recent hype by President Clinton and Secretary Albright that we are facing a "new terrorist war" is not helpful. You cannot have a "new" war when the "old" war never ended. The United States has been fighting this threat for almost thirty years. Terrorism is not spiraling out of control but neither has it disappeared.
Yet, terrorism is not war. It is a form of political violence but we should not confuse it with the massive commitment of ground, sea, and air forces that typify a genuine war. More men died in one day on Omaha Beach in 1944 than died from terrorism in the last ten years. Terrorism can be used to provoke a war (e.g. World War I), but its value as a tactic for shifting political fortunes is limited.
We have had some important successes capturing and deterring terrorists. Our experience over the past decade suggests instead that sound policies, aggressive law enforcement, and good intelligence yield important results in containing terrorism. Moreover, there is circumstantial evidence that groups and individuals that advocate terrorism are losing support rather than winning adherents.
For the United States and other nations the task is maintain pressure on states and groups that engage in terrorism by disrupting their capabilities and limiting their targets of opportunity. By doing so we will improve our chances that terrorism will become an isolated, rare phenomena.
Great post, Peach! Timmy (and the MSM) should televise Larry Johnson's totally awful "prediction." (Won't hold my breath, though).
