Gov´t Backs Off Idea of Civilian Patrol

The Department of Homeland Security announced Thursday that it has no plans to enlist citizen volunteers to help patrol U.S. borders, one day after the agency's top border enforcement official said he was exploring such an idea.

On Wednesday, Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Robert C. Bonner told The Associated Press that his agency was considering the training of volunteers to create "something akin to a Border Patrol auxiliary."

A Homeland Security spokesman issued a statement Thursday backing off Bonner's controversial suggestion.

"There are currently no plans by the Department of Homeland Security to use civilian volunteers to patrol the border," spokesman Brian J. Roehrkasse said. "That job should continue to be done by the highly trained, professional law enforcement officials."

Nope, can't do that. It might actually slow down illegals and terrorists crossing the border.

It was a fairly good idea but the volunteers can't officially be pulled off the border if they aren't connected to the border patrol.

It also might put power in the hands of citizens.

Police just hate to admit they cant cut the mustard.

During Ww2 there was a Civil Defense agency, it taught First aid and trained citizens to work with authorities in a crisis. The Police and Fire Depts. know they cant handle a major emergency that they will need help but they just cant bring themselves to admit it.In mass casualty incidents just training to stop the bleeding would be a great help, but Nooooo we cant have civilians in the way.

I used to patrol when I lived in Arizona.
I just see it as a civic resposibility.

I wish everyone did.

Which would be a very good thing. For all the good things President Bush has done, his ignoring the border problem has been very disappointing.

Yeah hell, the volunteers might make us look like the silly geese that we are. Can't be having leaks on our short comings and deficiencies from whistle blowers you know.

He's not ignoring it. Quite the contrary. He's keenly aware that millions are entering illegally, and he's determined to keep it that way.
