Who is this award named for? Judge Elihu Smails, the character in the film Caddyshack who asks of the obnoxious but lovable Al Czervick (played by Rodney Dangerfield), “Good Lord, what has this buffoon done now?”
As a special tribute to Judge Smails, every week we will issue this award to the biggest buffoon of the week … the person who, through his or her actions or public statements, has made a buffoon of themselves and everyone associated with them. Please note that since we slammed John "Crushed" Kerry on a daily basis when the site name was "crushkerry", he and his family are ineligible for this prestigious award. We also ask Ankle Biters to send in your nominations (no limits, so keep them coming). All we ask is that you tell us why you’re nominating the person, and include a link to any relevant stories.
With the nomination by the President of John Roberts to the US Supreme Court, this week provided a host of contestants for this prestigious award. Many of them were the usual suspects of the far left, who had their press releases written about 5 years ago, with only the name left blank.
Those groups were so predictable that choosing any of them would have been appropriate, but a bit boring. But there was one Democratic Senator whose response to the nomination was so obnoxious and stupid that it deserves mention.
This week's winner of the Judge Elihu Smails "Buffoon Of The Week" Award is Colorado Democratic Senator Ken "John Roberts Needs A Sex Change" Salazar. What propelled this "Gang of 14" dope to the top of this list? The following letter he sent to the President could have been sent by Gloria Steinem or Eleanor Smeal:
Dear President Bush:Can you believe this guy. John Roberts's qualifications just might be the best in America for a seat on the Supreme Court, yet Salazar is complaining because Roberts doesn't need to sit down to take a leak?I do not know yet how I will vote on the confirmation of Judge John G. Roberts Jr. I will honor the processes of the Senate in considering his nomination. The fact you have not selected a distinguished woman in the mold of Justice Sandra Day O’Connor is not a reason for disqualification. However, I want to express my disappointment that you have missed an opportunity to help create an America that includes women at all levels of our nation’s government.
If your nominee to the United States Supreme Court is confirmed, the face of the United States Supreme Court, with nine justices, will have only one woman. And in an America that has struggled over her history to include women, I do not believe this is a healthy portrayal of the kind of America we should be building.
Twenty-four years ago, President Ronald Reagan appointed Sandra Day O’Connor as the first woman justice of the United States Supreme Court. She served in that role with distinction. Justice O’Connor’s appointment created a milestone in history that was the culmination of the work and struggles of men and women over centuries to ensure that women received fair and equal treatment in America. As we all well know, women were not granted even the right to vote in America until the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920.
You and I both have two daughters. The profound message we should be giving to them is that their gender creates no limitations for them to live up to their God-given potential. Yet, I fear that with the loss of Justice Sandra Day O’Connor from the United States Supreme Court, we are sending the opposite message.

And why exactly should the President have nominated someone in the "mold" of O'Connor. In case he didn't realize it, O'Connor was a liberal. Oh, and Bush won the election, and has said since day 1 he wanted a justice in the mold of a "Scalia or Thomas", not "O'Connor". In case Salazar didn't realize it, this President actually means what he says.
And is he really stupid enough to think that not nominating a woman is making little girls all over the country think that "gender creates limitations for them to live up to their God-given potential."? Oh please, I'll bet their are just as many women in America who are glad Roberts was picked rather than Edith Clement. Plus, didn't President Bush 41 get assailed by the left for nominating Clarence Thomas when Thurgood Marshall retired? And if Clarence Thomas did retire somehow I don't think Salazar would be really happy if Janice Rogers Brown was nominated to fill his position.
But to anyone who's followed Salazar's brief Senatorial career, it is not surprising. He campaigned on a pledge to allow up or down votes on all judicial nominees, but quickly backtracked from that pledge and got behind filibusters, and later joined other obstructionists which led to the "Gang of 14" betrayal.
His hypocrisy is also shown by examiningthis statement made during the campaign:
“I would hope all nominees get up or down votes,” Salazar answered. “And the decision on an up-or-down vote should be based on whether or not the president’s nominee is qualified for the position.”Can anyone in there find the part where he says that their gender matters one way or the other? Me neither. But recall this is also the guy who signed a letter in support of William Myers to the 9th Circuit, then demanded the President not renominate Myers after he was filibustered.
But perhaps the most egregious thing this clown did since he's been in office is accuse Focus on The Family of "hijacking" the GOP and being "un-Christian". Their offense? Calling attention to his broken campaign promise to allow up or down votes. Maybe Salazar forgot about the commandment that says "Thou Shalt Not Lie".
So step on up Senator Salazar and claim your prize. But there's no need to be offended Senator. There's many women who have one this award, as well as people of all races, creeds and nationalities. You all have one thing in common - you're all buffoons.

LOL! I turned some heads in the office when I got to that part :) Just wasn't expecting the whole state. Well deserved, but unexpected. Good job!
It seems to me that Salazar's comment wasn't that outlandish, given the fact Laura Bush said she hoped President Bush would pick a woman, and Justice O'Connor expressed dissapointment that a woman was not picked.
