Of course they're the same ~ just check out Spanish history ~ note the 500 years it was a Moslem state, and there's your answer.
There is a lot of Indian blood (Mayan, Inca, etc.) in Central Americans and Mexicans, as well as European Spanish. So while it's true that there are similarities, they are not quite the same.
The Mexicans are about 90% Amerind and only about 10% Spanish, on the average. The typical Spaniard looks quite different from the average Mexicano.
