He's gone over this several times over the years and callers have gotten through (usually on Friday) to discuss.

For a period he switched to Fine Young Cannibals 'She Drives Me Crazy.'

The bottom line as best I recall/understand it is, Hynde/Pretenders/publishers can't really prevent him from using the music. When the doubt crept in, he stopped until apparently legal research proved that there was no impediment.

Hynde earns royalties every time it's played so no worries.

This is part I have problems with:

Hynde eventually decided to allow Limbaugh to use it, with Limbaugh donating approximately $500,000/year to the animal rights organization PETA

We're not talking royalties here. We're talking about Limbaugh donating $500,000 per year to the terrorist organization PETA to use a stupid song.

I'm amazed people aren't bothered by this.

I'm so glad he didn't go with "She Drives Me Crazy". I hear other talk-show hosts who open with that one and it sounds lame. It's hard to explain but somehow the bass-line on the Pretenders' song goes well with Rush's personality.
