More like a loud "bang", like those cap guns with the really loud plastic caps we used to have as kids, before that stuff became politically incorrect.

Blasting cap. Normally you'd never hear the detonator because the bomb would explode almost immediately.

Usually, on larger bombs, a detonation is a small explosion, large enough to trigger the bigger bomb.
