(Republican) Ken Mehlman did reply to one of the convention's previous speakers, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D, N.Y.).

On Monday, she told the La Raza convention that the Bush administration was not doing enough for Hispanic families.

"In 2006, it's going to be immigration," he said. "You wait and see."

As evidence, Dean cited Rep. Thomas G. Tancredo (R., Colo.), who has called for rounding up illegal immigrants and shipping them back home. He also referred to a bill sponsored by House Judiciary Chairman Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R., Wis.) that would make states verify individuals' immigration status before issuing them driver's licenses.

So, as the Dem National Chairman, Dean is saying that democrats are for illegal immigrations.

(Washington, DC; 4/22/03) -- A new national opinion poll finds that Americans believe it is necessary to take a hard line against those who break U.S. immigration laws. While polls have confirmed for years that Americans want significant reductions in legal immigration levels, and vigorous enforcement of laws against illegal immigration, the RoperASW March poll finds that Americans are willing to hold illegal immigrants personally accountable for their actions, and to penalize those who do not obey immigration laws. On current legal immigration:

The poll, conducted by RoperASW on behalf of Negative Population Growth, and released by the United To Secure America coalition (www.secureamerica.info), found that illegal immigration is seen as a "serious problem" by 85 percent of American adults. These numbers are consistent with nearly all opinion polls conducted on these issues. However, in addition to stepped-up law enforcement, an overwhelming majority of Americans believe that it is necessary to impose tough penalties, including incarceration, on illegal aliens.

In addition to deportation, 83 percent of respondents also favored "mandatory detention and forfeiture of property" for people who are found to be living here illegally. Seventy percent said they would also support mandatory prison sentences for immigration law violations, in addition to property forfeiture and deportation.

The poll also found support among the American public for cooperation between state and local entities and the federal government in pursuit of meaningful immigration enforcment. The poll found:

Americans Favor Tough Approach to Illegal Immigration

Scream Dean, the gift that keeps on giving.

The Republicans don't need to kiss any butt. They need to continue on the basis of policy. Hispanics will vote like most Americans, based on policy.

The truth is that Dean, like most liberals, sees all Hispanics as illegals or at the very least "the help".

I live in Texas and there has always been the hispanic guy, your buddy you play ball with, drink beer with, hang out with, just a friend and then there is your "wetback' or illegal. Illegals stand at the beer store and wait for a contractor to pick them up. The American whos ancestors were from Mexico drive to work, do their job and go about everyday work like whites and blacks and everyone else.

The Dems I don't think understand this and see all hispanic people as the "beer store" guys and it just isn't true. I have a mexican (small m) friend who has a Texas flag tattooed on his arm and has a heavier drawl than most of my other friends. This is where the Republicans win. No one likes to be pandered too and mexicans have very conservative leanings and will look through Deans crap.
