I've read all of the posts before posting this, as to not repeat anyone's thoughts, but found no one making this point... I am BIGTIME hoping that I'm just being a paranoid Hand Em Their Arse, but this pick doesn't really do anything for me........YET!

Maybe it's just that I've become very cynical of the President over the past couple of months (And trust me, I do love this man!), but to me the scenario hovering over the Supreme Court with regards to the next couple of years hasn't changed much....

Was this a tremendous conservative pick for President Bush? Absolutely! Could not have chosen a better man, HOWEVER, I'll start my backflips and handstands when Rehnquist resigns and the President picks someone LIKE REHNQUIST AND NOT O'CONNOR... If he chooses a Souter type, what changed? Nothing!

The scariest scenario of them all for me is Rehnquist DOES NOT resign, and God Forbid we lose the 2008 election... Rehnquist is that much older and sure to resign by then and a lib president chooses VERY lib justice... Then the "O'Connor-ish" vote goes very far left...

Anybody have thoughts on this?? If it's has been brought up and answered, I apologize... Just got home and quickly went through the posts and ddin't see iit anywhere...

Does it help to know that Roberts clerked for Rehnquist?

I think Rehnquist stayed on because it would have been very difficult indeed for the President to have to fill two seats at once. He'll resign in time to get the replacement. Bush spelled out his philosophy on judicial activism tonight in his announcement. He won't go against his own principles. Look for a 2006 Rehnquist resignation.
