"Also, the President doesn't necessarily have to make the announcement himself, although I would be surprised if he didn't. FDR sent the nomination of Senator Hugo L. (for liberal) Black (the opposite of his white KKK robe) directly to the Senate, where it was read aloud. Wouldn't you just LOVE the sight of Vice President Cheney reading aloud the name of an absolutely died-in-the-woll conservative-originalist who would send the Left into absolute hysteria while he was looking right at Pat Leahy?"

I like the way you think....but alas GWB doesn't have your imagination, your sense of decorum, history, etc.

This would also send the MSM into spasms...I really do like it.

I wonder, though, if FDR did that b/c Hugo was a Senator? Maybe he wanted to sit onthe floor to hear his name read or something?

At any rate..I like the idea...but GWB has no imagination.

According to the article I read on the nomination, FDR did it to get back at the Senate for rejecting the court-packing plan. Black was not popular at all with Southern Senators; in fact, they hated the pick. Even papers that supported the President and the New Deal excoriated the pick because Black had no real judicial experience and he was known to be extremely partisan. FDR wanted an activist on the Court; he knew Black would be such an activist; he also knew that the Southern Senators would never vote against a fellow Senator from the Deep South (Alabama).

Partly because of this strategery, I think that if the President can't get a Conservative approved as a replacement for Stevens or Ginsberg due to a filibuster then he should nominate Jeff Sessions. That would effectively nuke the Senate by forcing the 'Rat Senators to choose between alienating their base or causing a complete meltdown of comity and cooperation.
